Mossbrae Falls

Greg and I spent a long weekend in southern. Our first order of business was a visit to Mossbrae Falls, right outside Dunsmuir, CA. Greg has been wanting to go here for a long time and I was looking forward to it too since it looked wonderful from the photos I had seen online. We got up really early and left our hotel in Ashland by 5:30.

The hike to get to the waterfall is short: walk one mile along the railroad tracks. Just before reaching the trestle, we dropped down the bank to the Sacramento River and as we emerged from the trees…POW! There it was. Beautiful!!!

The water trickles down the rock face from above, splashing into the Sacramento River. The waterfall is quite wide, impossible to fit into one shot. Despite the brilliantly sunny day, we were down in a shady canyon so we were able to get some great photos.

Here is a video of it so you can get a sense of how much space this waterfall takes up. It’s really amazing.

There are no signs to this waterfall, but the railroad does allow people to walk along the tracks to get here. I highly recommend a visit here if you ever pass through Dunsmuir.
