After camping in the Mt. Hood area the previous night, I did a short hike this morning.
I parked at an informal trailhead on Road 17, south of Gibson Prairie Horse Camp. A few steps down the Surveyor’s Ridge Trail and I had this very nice view of Mt. Hood behind the shoulder of Shellrock Mountain:
After enjoying the view for awhile I set off south down the trail towards Shellrock Mountain:
After 0.4 miles I reached the side trail to the summit:
The old trail is abandoned and faint in places, but it wasn’t difficult to find my way to the summit 0.2 miles later:
The views up here are pretty awesome. Mt. Hood:
Looking south at Mill Creek Buttes and Lookout Mountain:
Looking west:
Indian Mountain and Chinidere Mountain:
Trees block the view to the northwest from the summit proper:
But if you move north you can see northwest to Mt. Defiance Mt. St. Helens:
Mt. Adams:
Looking northeast:
In 1934 a lookout cabin of some sort was built up here, and removed in 1945. I looked around for any evidence of it, but found none.
Gaia stats: 1.2 miles, 420′ elevation gain
