After visiting Mt. Pisgah we set out to find the old Black Mountain lookout. This one was nothing more than a crow’s nest up in a tree that was established in 1937. There is no trail or road to the summit but it’s not too hard to find thanks to good directions in Scott Cook’s excellent book, Bend Overall.
We parked on Road 30 and hiked up the hill to the summit of Black Mountain which is just a broad flat rocky area.
Although the ladder and crow’s nest is in disrepair and is completely unsafe it is still in remarkably good shape after 74 years.
The ground cabin where the lookout would have lived has been moved from the mountain to the (now closed) Ochoco Ranger Station.
