On the second day of the FFLA conference we visited one lookout in the afternoon. Aldrich Mountain is southeast of the little town of Dayville. The drive up Road 21, Road 2150, and Road 523 were smooth sailing, easily doable by any vehicle. We drove through several areas of burned forest, some of which was from the 2006 Shake Table Complex fire, and some of which was from 66,000-acre South Fork Complex fire in 2014.
The lookout wasn’t staffed yet when we visited. We were told that this tower is owned by the Oregon Department of Forestry even though it is in the Malheur National Forest.
