{"id":596,"date":"2018-08-31T13:46:47","date_gmt":"2018-08-31T13:46:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/old.cherylhill.net\/firelookouts\/?p=596"},"modified":"2019-10-15T22:35:21","modified_gmt":"2019-10-15T22:35:21","slug":"gold-butte-in-the-clouds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cherylhill.net\/firelookouts\/2018\/08\/31\/gold-butte-in-the-clouds\/","title":{"rendered":"Gold Butte in the Clouds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Greg and I stayed at Gold Butte Lookout in <a title=\"Gold Butte\" href=\"https:\/\/cherylhill.net\/firelookouts\/2013\/09\/24\/gold-butte\/\">September 2013<\/a> and again in <a title=\"Return to Gold Butte\" href=\"https:\/\/cherylhill.net\/firelookouts\/2016\/07\/14\/return-to-gold-butte\/\">July 2016<\/a>. We had reservations for early October 2017, but on September 6 I got an email telling me that all reservations for the remainder of the season were being canceled. The Scorpion Fire was too close for comfort and even though our reservation was still a month away they canceled us anyway. They ended up\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/GoldButteLookout\">wrapping the lookout<\/a>, although the fire never got this far.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1841\/42557260830_1ece49fbb3_c.jpg\" alt=\"GoldButteWrapped3_Sep2017\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This year, after 15 attempts at getting a reservation in July and August, I finally got a reservation for the last weekend in August on my 16th attempt.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1870\/42519213660_827aa55453_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After a <a href=\"http:\/\/cherylhill.net\/blog\/2018\/08\/28\/dome-rock\/\">short hike to Dome Rock<\/a>\u00a0on Saturday, we headed up Road 4697 to the lookout. Man, that road is getting ROUGH. We turned off on the lookout access road and unlocked the gate without any issues. (We would later learn reading the visitor log at the lookout that lots of people earlier this summer had been emailed the incorrect code and couldn&#8217;t unlock the gate, which meant they had to park here instead of further up.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1841\/43648451644_9e2b1dfc37_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There is always a supply for firewood for the lookout, but this year it was at the end of the road where the trail starts instead of up in the woodshed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1883\/42557066910_0ab33c0702_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When we arrived we discovered that one of the cots was set up. These have always been available, but we&#8217;ve never bothered trying to set up one before. I would take the bed and Greg would sleep on an air mattress on the floor. This time he used the cot:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1871\/42557063290_18658170b1_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was a beautiful afternoon:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1866\/29389675417_0e73dc3937_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Looking north:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1898\/42518084580_e109c42949_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mt. Jefferson:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1841\/43420105085_e806f24099_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1856\/43619594284_6a86264cc2_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1875\/29400352377_54debb21ff_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing and reading. I would have liked to read outside, but there were too many yellow jackets hanging around:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1894\/43628263784_5129360fef_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Before dinner we enjoyed some fine cheese and dessert wine:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1895\/29428939627_0e04f58a97_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Crazy clouds started rolling in:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1882\/43438935665_deb4c196b3_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1860\/44316611322_bb9706a3aa_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"457\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s an old Coleman stove up here (with some fuel canisters), and the cupboard is full of pots and pans:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1860\/44364944501_134317dddf_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But since all food, water, etc has to be lugged up here we went the easy route and boiled water with our JetBoil backpacking stove and had dehydrated backpacking meals:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1844\/43648446074_c125139dfb_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sunset was pretty awesome:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1878\/44344641151_7bd0c3a408_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1897\/43628486224_51d0fb9684_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1875\/44345097521_6fccbe5c89_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1843\/44297169382_a144816602_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1841\/43629371844_a9b06c11ac_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The next night would be the full moon so it was pretty bright. Between the moonlight and the clouds we didn&#8217;t see many stars, but the moon-illuminated clouds were pretty cool:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1884\/29409750037_7a2e15ab9b_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1854\/44355256481_4286c6239d_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When we woke up Sunday morning we were pretty socked-in:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1898\/30488457798_d44ee3e5ac_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1866\/43639727804_be6b6048f1_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It had rained a bit last night:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1865\/43639211034_baf32252c1_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1843\/43639724874_bb76398bf8_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We re-kindled the fire:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1887\/43639216764_89ff111694_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And heated up biscuits for breakfast:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1862\/29419551117_9c6aa70bda_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After a leisurely morning we decided to <a href=\"http:\/\/cherylhill.net\/blog\/2018\/09\/04\/elk-lake-creek-trail\/\">go for a hike on the Elk Lake Creek Trail<\/a>. It was too cloudy to\u00a0hike Battle Ax Mountain. On our hike back up to the lookout we saw this cute newt:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1854\/29420079947_fc2bb45487_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We brought more firewood up the trail and used an Ikea bag to carry it. This worked great!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1851\/29420631877_897131ee42_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was still cloudy up here:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1876\/29420083967_eba5401a7b_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We enjoyed a relaxing evening hanging out inside. While it was disappointing that all the clouds were blocking our views, I would rather have clouds than smoke:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1883\/29420628107_00f8efb8a1_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It rained again that night and it was another cloudy morning on Monday, but the clouds looked pretty cool swirling in and out of the trees:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1890\/43647801954_eaca59aaf0_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1879\/44364133191_5a823657b5_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1877\/29428945207_6d9e7990f5_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1859\/43667011064_e05cfa21d9_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The sun tried to come out for awhile, but never quite succeeded:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1884\/43667014294_819d299b18_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1852\/43667007904_1f3c2fe39b_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1873\/44335571312_54b04ececc_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We relaxed and read for awhile. It was such a nice way to spend the morning:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1876\/44335567072_f1b05c34ee_c.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then it was time to pack up and leave, which is always hard. We had our hatchet with us so we chopped up some kindling at the woodpile for future visitors, since there is no axe here.<\/p>\n<p>I love this place!
