{"id":557,"date":"2017-07-03T16:01:37","date_gmt":"2017-07-03T16:01:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/old.cherylhill.net\/firelookouts\/?p=557"},"modified":"2023-07-06T10:44:38","modified_gmt":"2023-07-06T17:44:38","slug":"soda-mountain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cherylhill.net\/firelookouts\/2017\/07\/03\/soda-mountain\/","title":{"rendered":"Soda Mountain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Type: 10&#8242; wooden tower with ODF cab<br \/>\nStatus: Staffed<br \/>\nElevation: 6,091 feet<br \/>\nVisited: July 2, 2017<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update: I <a href=\"https:\/\/cherylhill.net\/firelookouts\/2023\/06\/29\/return-to-soda-mountain\/\">visited<\/a> this lookout in May 2023 and it is no longer being staffed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During our Fourth of July weekend in southern Oregon we visited the Soda Mountain Lookout in the Cascade Siskiyou National Monument (it&#8217;s also surrounded by the Soda Mountain Wilderness).\u00a0We parked at the Hobart Bluff Trailhead and hiked south on the PCT. You can read more about our hike <a href=\"http:\/\/cherylhill.net\/blog\/2017\/07\/06\/soda-mountain\/\">here<\/a>, but I will say that we were lucky to be here during wildflower season. Beautiful!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4091\/35369795250_1523bd30be_c.jpg\" alt=\"35369795250_1523bd30be_c.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4139\/35369900600_9ded7edfbe_c.jpg\" alt=\"35369900600_9ded7edfbe_c.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After a mile on the PCT a cutoff trail heads uphill joins up with the rough dirt road that accesses the summit. Then it was a hot trudge up the road to the summit. This part was just under a mile.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4098\/34947836733_3933e51743_c.jpg\" alt=\"34947836733_3933e51743_c.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The summit is rather ugly, crowded with all sorts of towers and equipment. There&#8217;s so much of it that the lookout itself is dwarfed by it all.
