The road to the top is in good shape but visitors aren&#8217;t allowed to drive all the way up. We parked at a gate and walked the rest of the way. The gate is secured with numerous daisy-chained padlocks.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5483\/9399667015_b43b1336b8_z.jpg\" alt=\"Many padlocks\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After a short 0.8mi walk we reached the tower. A lookout has been located here since 1916. This is the third one, built in 1963.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2876\/9402429322_0b699024db_z.jpg\" alt=\"Odell Butte Lookout\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5510\/9399668253_78bda5c438_z.jpg\" alt=\"Odell Butte Lookout\" width=\"425\" height=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The guy in the tower came out on the catwalk but didn&#8217;t respond to our &#8220;good morning&#8221; greeting. So we climbed up on the rocks nearby to enjoy the views. Drive 2.8 miles then turn right onto Road 500. Drive 1.6 miles and park at a switchback. The road is gated here and public motor vehicles are prohibited beyond this point.
