During a horrifically hot and smoky weekend in eastern Oregon I visited Dixie Butte.<\/p>\n

I drove up rough rocky Road 2610 for about four miles, then I parked and walked the rest of the way. Even though it was ungodly hot I walked because I wasn’t sure how much worse the road would get, plus I wanted to scope out the wildflowers:<\/p>\n

The lookout came into view:<\/p>\n

After a hot trudge I reached the summit:<\/p>\n

I was surprised to see any blue sky at all as there was a lot of smoke in the air. Views didn’t stretch nearly as far as they would on a clear day. Looking north:<\/p>\n

Looking southeast:<\/p>\n

\"Dixie<\/p>\n

After a brief conversation with the lookout on duty I went over to the other part of the summit:<\/p>\n

Old outhouse:<\/p>\n

New outhouse:<\/p>\n

\"Dixie<\/p>\n

Hiking back down:<\/p>\n

Dixie Butte: from Prairie city drive east on Highway 26 for 8.7 miles spent her left. After 0.1 miles stay to the left. 4.1 miles of driving. Then I got out and walked. This road is rough and rocky I\u2019m not suitable for low clearance vehicles.<\/p>\n

A cabin with a rooftop platform was built around 1911:<\/p>\n

A cupola cabin was constructed in the 1920s:<\/p>\n

In 1935 an L-4 lookout was built<\/p>\n

\n1937<\/p>\n

Finally that cabin was replaced with an R-6 lookout in 1968. It still stands and is staffed very summer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
