Read more about the hike <a href=\"https:\/\/cherylhill.net\/blog\/2023\/09\/28\/russel-mountain\/\">on my adventure blo<\/a>g.<\/p>\n<p>1.9 miles from the trailhead I reached the lookout access road, turned right, and 0.2 miles later I was at the lookout:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53372466707_7e1e6de6fe_b.jpg\" alt=\"Russel Mountain Lookout\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53376745547_19332ebcd8_b.jpg\" alt=\"Russel Mountain\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The 82&#8242; tower was built in 1949 and is no longer staffed. There are signs telling you to stay off, but incredibly the lower stairs have not been removed as they usually are in such situations:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53376750802_9076f0ee95_b.jpg\" alt=\"Russel Mountain\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53376750177_c3797cc9a8_b.jpg\" alt=\"Russel Mountain\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Well this is troubling:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53377673846_dd59375287_b.jpg\" alt=\"Russel Mountain\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I poked around in the trees north of the tower to see if I could get a view from the ground, and indeed I could:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53377671081_6eebb834a2_b.jpg\" alt=\"Russel Mountain\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Looking behind me up at the tower:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53378117910_82fc52037c_b.jpg\" alt=\"Russel Mountain\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53377847423_be680e130b_b.jpg\" alt=\"Russel Mountain\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Forest Service apparently considers this a trailhead. The Sugarloaf Trail continues west from here along a former roadbed:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53376751007_2662343d1e_b.jpg\" alt=\"Russel Mountain\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Looking back down the road I hiked up there&#8217;s another newish-looking sign:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53376751062_5b4a8e6c38_b.jpg\" alt=\"Russel Mountain\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a nice little meadow just south of the lookout and I was dismayed to see that some jerks had driven across it sometime recently:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53378120255_2e0aea46a4_b.jpg\" alt=\"Russel Mountain\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I set off back down the road:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53378116215_6dda65b267_b.jpg\" alt=\"Russel Mountain\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then turned onto the trail and began my descent back down to the car. After 3.5 miles turn left on Clear Creek Road, which turns into Road 66. Drive for four miles then turn right to stay on Road 66. From that junction drive 13.8 miles to Road 450 and turn right. Drive 1.2 miles up 450 to the lookout.<\/p>\n<p><strong>History<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 1921 a 50&#8242; pole tower was constructed on Russel Mountain:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/oregonlookouts.weebly.com\/russel-mountain.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oregonlookouts.weebly.com\/uploads\/1\/5\/9\/1\/1591048\/6399873_orig.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n1921<\/p>\n<p>In 1949 an 82&#8242; tower was built, which is the tower that stands today:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/oregonlookouts.weebly.com\/russel-mountain.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oregonlookouts.weebly.com\/uploads\/1\/5\/9\/1\/1591048\/8242910_orig.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n1955<\/p>\n<p>A notice in the 12\/23\/1987 edition of the Hells Canyon Journal said &#8220;seeking public input to aid in the development development of alternatives for future management and use of Russel Mountain Lookout.&#8221; Pine District Ranger Mary Peterson was quoted as saying &#8220;Because we have more cost effective methods for fire detection with aerial observation, and because Horse Mountain Lookout in Idaho covers much of the same viewing area, the lookout is no longer used for fire detection. It now becomes necessary to determine what to do with the tower. I would like ideas and suggestions from the public to help develop a full range of options from which to make a decision.
