{"id":1421,"date":"2023-08-21T08:37:39","date_gmt":"2023-08-21T15:37:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cherylhill.net\/firelookouts\/?p=1421"},"modified":"2023-08-26T07:48:37","modified_gmt":"2023-08-26T14:48:37","slug":"white-point","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cherylhill.net\/firelookouts\/2023\/08\/21\/white-point\/","title":{"rendered":"White Point"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Type: 30&#8242; tower<br \/>\nStatus: Remote camera<br \/>\nElevation: 5,075&#8242;<br \/>\nVisited: July 12, 2023<\/p>\n<p>Road 290 to the White Point lookout is not in great shape, its biggest problem being that it&#8217;s getting quite overgrown:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53092528542_e426986537_c.jpg\" alt=\"White Point Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>1.1 miles along Road 290 is the short spur to the lookout, which is gated:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53092528507_59a1a34462_c.jpg\" alt=\"White Point Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This lookout sits in the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest but is owned and operated by the Oregon Department of Forestry. It is no longer staffed and is now the site of a remotely-monitored camera. (Some of this equipment was stolen when the lookout was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ODFSouthwest\/posts\/pfbid09vY5MqvqvhsTManYipmPiCY91FxvJ7cxSAvSbuxFgvz9fs2bGu16najWjNUxENGsl\">broken into<\/a> last August.) At 2.8 miles the road forks. Take road 200 up to the left. Drive 4.1 miles then turn left on Road 290 and drive 1.1 overgrown miles to the gate. The lookout is 0.1 miles beyond this gate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>History<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A 40&#8242; tower was built on White Point in 1951.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oregonlookouts.weebly.com\/uploads\/1\/5\/9\/1\/1591048\/4917060_orig.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\n1959<\/p>\n<p>That tower was replaced with a 30&#8242; tower with a 14&#215;14 Amort flat roof cab in 1974.
