(See my reports from <a href=\"https:\/\/cherylhill.net\/firelookouts\/2015\/04\/01\/return-to-fivemile-butte\/\">2015<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cherylhill.net\/firelookouts\/2017\/03\/02\/another-trip-to-fivemile-butte\/\">2017<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/cherylhill.net\/firelookouts\/2019\/01\/23\/fivemile-butte-again\/\">2019<\/a>. I also visited in 2022 with Greg.) It was 30 degrees when we parked at Billy Bob Sno-Park at 12:30. We put on our packs and snowshoes and headed out. It took us an hour and 40 minutes to snowshoe the 2.6 miles to the lookout:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52762570873_5369264478_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fivemile Butte Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A bit of residual warmth was left from the previous renters (who had arrived at the parking lot just as we were heading out):<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52761535882_12ab1e5c4b_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fivemile Butte Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52762569813_617e12e66f_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fivemile Butte Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When Greg and I were up here in January 2022 the dust pan was warped and unusable. It was later replaced with this dust pan, which appears to have been left too close to the stove. Whoever melted this dust pan and turned it into a piece of trash decided to leave it behind for someone else to deal with:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52762484940_5c19dba93f_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fivemile Butte Lookout\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The ash bin hadn&#8217;t been emptied in awhile either:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52762328954_d16bc824c3_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fivemile Butte Lookout\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The supply of wood in the woodshed was getting very low. Forecasters are calling for a cold wet spring and this isn&#8217;t enough to last:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52762330429_dc8909b9b9_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fivemile Butte Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52761534222_866373c01d_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fivemile Butte Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Someone had left a snow shovel, which proved helpful:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52772229796_09435ed098_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fivemile Butte Lookout\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We gathered snow in my collapsible lightweight Sea to Summit bucket and melted it in a pot on the stove:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52762328249_3e64719e39_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fivemile Butte Lookout\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52772434549_60e0932dfb_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fivemile Butte Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We were pretty socked-in all afternoon:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52762077701_1f0a083c98_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fivemile Butte Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But the clouds cleared out after sunset and we could see some stars. Not a lot, though, as the moon was nearly full and BRIGHT:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52762180086_826d59d333_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fivemile Butte Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52762666833_26867cb1c3_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fivemile Butte Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That night at 9pm while we were laying in bed reading two snowmobiles roared up. The men went into the woodshed, chopped some wood, and made a campfire about 20 feet from the base of the stairs. When Deb was out on the deck they told her they did this frequently. In the logbook other renters mention this as well. I have since heard that the Forest Service put a lock (only renters get the combo) on the woodshed to prevent this from happening, but I wouldn&#8217;t be surprised if the lock gets busted.<\/p>\n<p>The clouds were gathering again by Sunday morning, but we were treated to a lovely sunrise:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52766394686_47aefdfcce_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fivemile Butte Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52765977897_af22c05bd7_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fivemile Butte Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We could see Mt. Rainier and Mt. Adams to the north:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52766828705_0382f33b6d_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fivemile Butte Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"522\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52766791329_0b15819d5d_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fivemile Butte Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then we were socked-in again:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52766515171_5726955fbd_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fivemile Butte Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After relaxing in the cabin in the morning we went for an early afternoon walk:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52772663713_d52917e91f_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fivemile Butte Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52771677527_032280a1f0_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fivemile Butte Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>No one had been on the Eightmile Loop Trail recently but we set out on it, breaking trail as we went:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52771687682_47268bdec8_c.jpg\" alt=\"Exploring Eightmile Loop Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52772477109_4d1f2d9eb6_c.jpg\" alt=\"Exploring Eightmile Loop Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52772218646_fba0baee3b_c.jpg\" alt=\"Exploring Eightmile Loop Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Breaking trail was tiring and when we reached a huge fallen tree we made that our turnaround point and headed back:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52771686612_690d82dd49_c.jpg\" alt=\"Exploring Eightmile Loop Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The afternoon was cloudy:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52772646690_61b1fdd811_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fivemile Butte Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then it turned quite snowy, as you can see from the accumulation on the railing:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52772230786_d0b9ea7647_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fivemile Butte Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We played Five Crowns and Deb totally beat me both nights!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52772644985_6527463513_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fivemile Butte Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was too cloudy for a nice sunrise the next morning. We did spot some critter tracks in the snow. Mouse, maybe?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52772644805_1caa8015cd_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fivemile Butte Lookout\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A bit of a break in the clouds:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52772644610_3db0ee8ae6_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fivemile Butte Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52772643685_8a6ca4f8a0_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fivemile Butte Lookout\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We swept and cleaned and restocked the firewood before heading out mid-morning. Our tracks from yesterday&#8217;s outing were totally covered by new snow.
