It’s unclear exactly when this happened, but at some point over the winter of 2021-2022 the rest of the lookout on Abbott Butte has collapsed. The lookout was included inside the boundary of the Rogue-Umpqua Divide Wilderness in 1984 and had been abandoned for awhile. The cabin was still intact as recently as 2015, when someone posted this trip report<\/a> from a hike up there. Sometime after 2015 the cabin collapsed, although the tower itself remained standing. In November 2021 it was reported on Facebook<\/a> that the tower was still standing. The owner of the geocache<\/a> up there reported in last month that the tower had finally collapsed (photo<\/a>).<\/p>\n

2023 update: I hiked up to Abbott Butte (see report here<\/a>). It’s a nice hike, although the trail doesn’t seem to be receiving any maintenance and is overgrown. The collapsed tower was still there, but I later learned that at some point after my visit the Forest Service burned the remains, probably out of liability concerns.<\/p>\n
