This was the first of three lookouts I visited today. This sign at the bottom of road where I turned off of Highway 66 was ominous, but I think they are referring to winter maintenance, because the drive was fine:<\/p>\n

The lookout is no longer staffed. It now serves as a structure upon which equipment and cameras are mounted:<\/p>\n

Saw some rusty old cans:<\/p>\n

The old outhouse:<\/p>\n

There are communication towers all over the place up here:<\/p>\n

There were a lot of clouds this day but I still had some views. This is Hamacker Mountain<\/a> to the southeast with some kind of dome equipment:<\/p>\n

Only the bottom of Mt. McLoughlin was visible:<\/p>\n

Directions<\/strong><\/p>\n

From Highway 66 west of Keno turn south onto Hamacker Mountain Road. Drive 5.6 paved miles, then look for an unmarked gravel road on the right. Turn here and drive 1.9 miles to summit. It’s a good gravel road up until the last 0.2 miles when it gets a bit rough.<\/p>\n

In the 1920s a lookout tower was built on Chase Mountain, and in 1928 an accompanying ground cabin was built for living quarters.<\/p>\n

In 1951 a steel tower was built, which is the tower that still stands there now:<\/p>\n
