Hood area the previous night, I did a short hike this morning.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I parked at an informal trailhead on Road 17, south of Gibson Prairie Horse Camp. A few steps down the Surveyor&#8217;s Ridge Trail and I had this very nice view of Mt. Hood behind the shoulder of Shellrock Mountain:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2rQRrob\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55030449426_a018d77719_c.jpg\" alt=\"Surveyor&#039;s Ridge Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2rQTaZF\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55030787885_05441af62b_c.jpg\" alt=\"Surveyor&#039;s Ridge Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After enjoying the view for awhile I set off south down the trail towards Shellrock Mountain:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2rQTaYJ\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55030787830_d8d848bdb6_c.jpg\" alt=\"Surveyor&#039;s Ridge Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After 0.4 miles I reached the side trail to the summit:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2rQRsaM\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55030452071_f040e0b36c_c.jpg\" alt=\"Shellrock Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The old trail is abandoned and faint in places, but it wasn&#8217;t difficult to find my way to the summit 0.2 miles later:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2rQRs8x\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55030451941_3959cffe6b_c.jpg\" alt=\"Shellrock Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The views up here are pretty awesome. Mt. Hood:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2rQLSgi\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55029557567_5133c619ed_c.jpg\" alt=\"Shellrock Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Looking south at Mill Creek Buttes and Lookout Mountain:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2rQTaWK\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55030787715_27688da5bf_c.jpg\" alt=\"Shellrock Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Looking west:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2rQTbnj\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55030789140_29d495bf08_c.jpg\" alt=\"Shellrock Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Indian Mountain and Chinidere Mountain:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2rQLUk3\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55029564512_6180bb9f58_c.jpg\" alt=\"Shellrock Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Trees block the view to the northwest from the summit proper:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2rQSMX3\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55030713724_4019b1fbd1_c.jpg\" alt=\"Shellrock Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But if you move north you can see northwest to Mt. Defiance Mt. St. Helens:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2rQSNmE\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55030715094_7914fc8602_c.jpg\" alt=\"Shellrock Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mt. Adams:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2rQLTM9\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55029562662_08b040e49e_c.jpg\" alt=\"Shellrock Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Looking northeast:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2rQTcqG\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55030792700_7d857913e9_c.jpg\" alt=\"Shellrock Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 1934 a lookout cabin of some sort was built up here, and removed in 1945.
