{"id":4449,"date":"2022-09-01T18:39:54","date_gmt":"2022-09-01T18:39:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cherylhill.net\/blog\/?p=4449"},"modified":"2023-09-07T14:05:34","modified_gmt":"2023-09-07T14:05:34","slug":"north-mountain-lookout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cherylhill.net\/blog\/2022\/09\/01\/north-mountain-lookout\/","title":{"rendered":"North Mountain Lookout"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Monday, August 8 &#8211; Tuesday, August 9, 2022<\/p>\n<p>I lucked into beautiful weather when staying at the North Mountain Lookout near Darrington, Washington.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Back in 2015 I heard about a group who was restoring the North Mountain Lookout. They were accepting donations through Paypal so I made a donation. A few months later in March 2016 I learned they were doing an Indiegogo fundraiser so I donated to that too. The following month the fundraising campaign ended and I got an email stating that they didn&#8217;t raise as much as they hoped, but at least it was something.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52339380428_899acdc191_z.jpg\" alt=\"NorthMountain\" width=\"640\" height=\"316\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then I didn&#8217;t hear anything more after that. No updates were sent to the Indiegogo donors on the progress of the restoration. At some point I stumbled on the Friends of North Mountain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/northmountainlookout\">Facebook page<\/a>, and I was able to keep up with their progress.<\/p>\n<p>When the lookout became a rental in 2021 it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airbnb.com\/rooms\/50778329\">listed on Airbnb<\/a> instead of Recreation.gov. Summer 2022 dates opened up in back in February and the weekends were snapped up very fast, but I managed to snag a Monday night in August. After fees and taxes it came out to $247\/night. Definitely a splurge for me!<\/p>\n<p>I picked up the key at Moe&#8217;s in Darrington then drove up the mountain. The total drive to the top is 13.2 miles, and there&#8217;s a gate at 11.9 miles, which I opened with the key, then drove on through:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52302048103_4c69f66320_c.jpg\" alt=\"North Mountain Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Made it!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52301056602_0f0b9514d9_c.jpg\" alt=\"North Mountain Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a picnic table behind the tower with a view of Mt. Baker:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52302047123_eb31cc3a82_c.jpg\" alt=\"North Mountain Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lots of people hike or bike up to see the lookout so they provide a sign for renters to use:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52302289542_9e9f49d4a9_c.jpg\" alt=\"North Mountain Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The interior looks fantastic. The volunteers did such a good job restoring this place. There is a bed, table and chairs, and a counter\/cabinet full of supplies that I didn&#8217;t use. Military planes on training flights flew close by &#8211; and sometimes directly over &#8211; the lookout. The noise was absolutely deafening:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52301060652_063eded501_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fighter plane\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I was lucky to have a clear sunny day with fantastic views. Mt. Beautiful spot up here!
