So we were pretty dismayed when the forecast called for a record-breaking heat wave. (It ended up being 108 in Portland this day.) We decided to go for it anyway, getting up at 3am so we could get an early start. When we got to the Grouse Vista Trailhead (2,400&#8242;) at 5:30am it was already 70 degrees.<\/p>\n<p>Hiking up the Grouse Vista Trail is always a slog because it&#8217;s SO rocky, but at least we were fortunate to be in shade thanks to our early start. There was haze but the views were still pretty great. Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Hood:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51274364283_bc0e16b748_c.jpg\" alt=\"Silver Star Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sturgeon Rock and the horrendously ugly clearcuts beyond:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51273450192_8bf55af5c8_c.jpg\" alt=\"Silver Star Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We could see Ed&#8217;s Trail below. This is how we used to come up Silver Star until Road 4109 to the trailhead became too rough to drive:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51274195966_3dcc4715c4_c.jpg\" alt=\"Silver Star Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Looking down on the Bluff Mountain Trail:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51275223595_9f5c2244e4_c.jpg\" alt=\"Silver Star Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately we found more evidence of disrespectful visitors up there. Trash in the form of discarded orange peels (we packed these out):<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51275211775_76fe7276f9_c.jpg\" alt=\"Silver Star Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Someone has vandalized the summit with this large steel cross. Apparently people take it down and others keep putting it back up. I&#8217;ve heard it was actually placed in concrete last year. Parts of this trail were very overgrown and brushy:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51275202349_4b27262fbd_c.jpg\" alt=\"Silver Star Mountain\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We climbed up the opposite slope from the saddle where more beargrass awaited:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51275204299_d2aec03864_c.jpg\" alt=\"Silver Star Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The beargrass was the main attraction here but there were other flowers too:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51273781102_b640412845_c.jpg\" alt=\"Silver Star Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51274528541_f2d4bfcbff_c.jpg\" alt=\"Silver Star Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51274540021_a0d60b2a5a_c.jpg\" alt=\"Silver Star Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This trail is called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/recarea\/giffordpinchot\/recarea\/?recid=31560\">Indian Pits Trail<\/a> because it leads to pits in the talus slopes that may have been used by Native Americans as vision quest sites or hunting blinds. We did not go as far as those and stopped at 0.7 miles at a rocky viewpoint where we could see Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainier, and Mt. Adams:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51275533560_7b72d7cdbc_c.jpg\" alt=\"Silver Star Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"449\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51273758247_2ed0fc9b5c_c.jpg\" alt=\"Silver Star Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51274483041_406c4a7750_c.jpg\" alt=\"Silver Star Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51275235034_772421f5f7_c.jpg\" alt=\"Silver Star Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51275545105_1ef82e57b0_c.jpg\" alt=\"Silver Star Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The wind was pretty strong at times, gusting up to 20 mph according to my Kestrel. It was warming up fast and was 82 degrees at 10:30 (at 4,000&#8242; elevation). We would have loved to hang out and enjoy the scene longer, but we had to head down before it got too hot, so off we went:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51275543750_1db23f36ea_c.jpg\" alt=\"Silver Star Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51275555565_02a7065d35_c.jpg\" alt=\"Silver Star Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Battling through the thick brush again:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51275552670_05ab6234f7_c.jpg\" alt=\"Silver Star Mountain\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And laboring up the slope in the hot sun:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51275566195_570883b047_c.jpg\" alt=\"Silver Star Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Back on the Grouse Vista Trail it was a long hot slog back down to the car:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51275564790_14eb219503_c.jpg\" alt=\"Silver Star Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Despite the heat and sleep deprivation it was worth it to see the beargrass bloom!
