We started off on the Independent Mine Trail:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51221495341_75b828e569_c.jpg\" alt=\"Lookout Mountain hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The first part of the trail follows an old roadbed:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51222572410_33627f9641_c.jpg\" alt=\"Lookout Mountain hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We were pleased to see signs of very recent trail maintenance:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51222571690_7b60a5256e_c.jpg\" alt=\"Lookout Mountain hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Passing through a hellebore meadow we could see Mt. Jefferson and the tip of Mt. \/><\/p>\n<p>After 0.7 miles the trail started to steeply descend, so we made this our turnaround point:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We returned 0.7 miles back to the junction and headed downhill:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Just before reaching the trailhead we passed below one of the remaining buildings from the old Mother Lode Mine:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" headed down the short Baneberry Trail. The mosquitoes were out again so we had both the ThermaCell and the citronella candle going.
