{"id":3714,"date":"2007-07-20T20:19:36","date_gmt":"2007-07-20T20:19:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cherylhill.net\/blog\/?p=3714"},"modified":"2021-05-13T15:13:54","modified_gmt":"2021-05-13T15:13:54","slug":"iron-mountain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cherylhill.net\/blog\/2007\/07\/20\/iron-mountain\/","title":{"rendered":"Iron Mountain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the 4th of July I did the hike up to Iron Mountain on a hot beautiful day.<\/p>\n<p>There were lots of columbine along the trail:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/1398\/859566204_a620cb4665_c.jpg\" alt=\"Columbine\" width=\"800\" height=\"531\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The trail traverses the lower slope of Cone Peak (which is right next door to Iron Mountain):<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/1333\/858707177_856c3f07e2_c.jpg\" alt=\"Cone Peak\" width=\"800\" height=\"531\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The trail crossed this huge rocky area where a billion wildflowers were blooming. All the hikers going through here were stopping to take pictures. It was a pretty impressive display:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/1304\/859567020_cf2408c31e_c.jpg\" alt=\"Attention-getters\" width=\"800\" height=\"531\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I encountered some ladies who were tallying all the wildflowers they saw on the hike. They said they were up to 50!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/1143\/858707635_796fb313a0_c.jpg\" alt=\"Hardy flowers\" width=\"800\" height=\"531\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/1134\/858707739_2370191c46_c.jpg\" alt=\"Paintbrush extravaganza\" width=\"800\" height=\"531\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/1045\/859567486_e6f5e5064e_c.jpg\" alt=\"Walking through wildflowers\" width=\"800\" height=\"531\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Looking west to Iron Mountain:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/1145\/858707997_f7c7bc7a3b_c.jpg\" alt=\"Iron Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"531\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After a hike through the forest and a steep climb, I reached the summit of Iron Mountain. There&#8217;s an old fire lookout up here. Apparently the lookout that preceded this one blew off the mountain in a 1976 windstorm. Yikes! Hood peeking into view to the north.
