{"id":3307,"date":"2020-08-07T19:23:37","date_gmt":"2020-08-07T19:23:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cherylhill.net\/blog\/?p=3307"},"modified":"2020-08-25T17:14:40","modified_gmt":"2020-08-25T17:14:40","slug":"hazel-hub-lakes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cherylhill.net\/blog\/2020\/08\/07\/hazel-hub-lakes\/","title":{"rendered":"Hazel &#038; Hub Lakes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Saturday, July 18, 2020<\/p>\n<p>The first hike we did while <a href=\"http:\/\/cherylhill.net\/blog\/2020\/08\/06\/up-up-lookout\/\">staying at the Up Up Lookout<\/a> was to Hazel and Hub Lakes. <!--more-->Greg had trouble getting going in the morning, and it was an hour long drive to the trailhead, so we didn&#8217;t start hiking until noon. Notice the trailhead sign here, which isn&#8217;t full of bullet holes like many Forest Service signs are in Oregon:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50186630611_edebcf60c1_c.jpg\" alt=\"Hiking to Hazel and Hub Lakes\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The trail starts out on Ward Creek Trail #262 in a nice forest of cedars, some of which were quite big:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50186641626_0dce29c1c4_c.jpg\" alt=\"Hiking to Hazel and Hub Lakes\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50186890832_67902418fd_c.jpg\" alt=\"Hiking to Hazel and Hub Lakes\" width=\"533\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We passed a waterfall on Ward Creek called Dipper Falls in our hiking book, but which was totally missing from the topo map:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50186890017_1e52f95e42_c.jpg\" alt=\"Hiking to Hazel and Hub Lakes\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After 2.6 miles we left the Ward Creek Trail and started up Hub-Hazel Lakes Trail #280:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50186091558_93e6f52e9c_c.jpg\" alt=\"Hiking to Hazel and Hub Lakes\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50186094533_cefafa1736_c.jpg\" alt=\"Hiking to Hazel and Hub Lakes\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We started seeing some nice wildflowers:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50186095023_44805879ba_c.jpg\" alt=\"Hiking to Hazel and Hub Lakes\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>2.5 miles from the trailhead we reached an unmarked junction where a trail headed steeply downhill to Hazel Lake:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50186667411_dbaf8ea619_c.jpg\" alt=\"Hiking to Hazel and Hub Lakes\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50186666486_86ae7ca8da_c.jpg\" alt=\"Hiking to Hazel and Hub Lakes\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50186119913_2cb5fb4132_c.jpg\" alt=\"Hiking to Hazel and Hub Lakes\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50186916492_9d7402de25_c.jpg\" alt=\"Hiking to Hazel and Hub Lakes\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After a short break there we returned to the main trail and continued on:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50186118218_509462b8af_c.jpg\" alt=\"Hiking to Hazel and Hub Lakes\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50186913807_60b1fb55a9_c.jpg\" alt=\"Hiking to Hazel and Hub Lakes\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We crossed Hub Lake&#8217;s outflow:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50186939847_d85f1d1678_c.jpg\" alt=\"Hiking to Hazel and Hub Lakes\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And about ten minutes after that we reached Hub Lake:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50186938347_9a26620058_c.jpg\" alt=\"Hiking to Hazel and Hub Lakes\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The trail continues beyond the lake, switchbacking steeply up the hillside in the photo below to meet up with the Up Up Ridge Trail on top. (We would hike up there from a different trailhead the <a href=\"http:\/\/cherylhill.net\/blog\/2020\/08\/08\/eagle-peak\/\">following day<\/a>.) From the lake we couldn&#8217;t quite see the summit of Eagle Peak above us, which is out of frame and out of sight to the right in the photo below:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50186687511_0d7c3877cc_c.jpg\" alt=\"Hiking to Hazel and Hub Lakes\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s an old abandoned mine in that hillside pictured above, a little ways off the trail that heads up the hill. I used the zoom on my point-and-shoot to get a photo.
