{"id":3257,"date":"2020-07-14T20:27:09","date_gmt":"2020-07-14T20:27:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cherylhill.net\/blog\/?p=3257"},"modified":"2020-11-18T21:01:46","modified_gmt":"2020-11-18T21:01:46","slug":"tanner-lakes-and-tanner-mountain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cherylhill.net\/blog\/2020\/07\/14\/tanner-lakes-and-tanner-mountain\/","title":{"rendered":"Tanner Lakes and Tanner Mountain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Friday, July 3, 2020<\/p>\n<p>Today we did a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonhikers.org\/field_guide\/Tanner_Lakes_Loop_Hike\">loop hike<\/a> involving both of the Tanner Lakes as well as Tanner Mountain, all of which lie inside the Red Buttes Wilderness.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A quick note about the name. The features in this area with the name Tanner were originally given that name, but at some point erroneously became &#8220;Tannen&#8221;. This mistake was <a href=\"https:\/\/geonames.usgs.gov\/apex\/f?p=138:3:::NO::P3_FID,P3_TITLE:1150889,Tanner%20Lake\">corrected<\/a> by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names in 2002, but the Forest Service persists in using &#8220;Tannen&#8221; for some reason. There&#8217;s an article about the name saga <a href=\"http:\/\/web.thedailycourier.com\/zachsadventures\/blog\/blog.html?e=786\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The trail starts at the end of Road 041. A new-looking sign near the beginning of the hike still calls it &#8220;Tannen Lakes Trail&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50092212921_f8cd987916_b.jpg\" alt=\"Tanner Lakes Loop Hike\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was a short 0.4 miles of hiking through the forest:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50092442807_1d97ac0faf_b.jpg\" alt=\"Tanner Lakes Loop Hike\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then we reached Tanner Lake. There&#8217;s a campsite right on the trail where it passes by the lake:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50091626718_b94acce313_b.jpg\" alt=\"Tanner Lakes Loop Hike\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Tanner Lake:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50091626223_5d52f2e4a7_b.jpg\" alt=\"Tanner Lakes Loop Hike\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50091625673_1600b32e2e_b.jpg\" alt=\"Tanner Lake\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We continued on the trail towards East Tanner Lake, passing some nice wildflowers along the way:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50091625248_644b9b86d4_b.jpg\" alt=\"Tanner Lakes Loop Hike\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50092207021_6db1ac1d3d_b.jpg\" alt=\"Tanner Lakes Loop Hike\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50092212326_8faa16ecf1_b.jpg\" alt=\"Tanner Lakes Loop Hike\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50092444507_7b5fb17f5d_b.jpg\" alt=\"Tanner Lakes Loop Hike\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We saw some pretty big trees. These two were uphill of the trail between the two lakes:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50092211761_9816ae47f4_b.jpg\" alt=\"Tanner Lakes Loop Hike\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p>More wildflowers:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50092210526_f3cf12a72d_b.jpg\" alt=\"Tanner Lakes Loop Hike\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50092443467_dda69b11da_b.jpg\" alt=\"Tanner Lakes Loop Hike\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50091646778_acb9c7ef46_b.jpg\" alt=\"Tanner Lakes Trail\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sections of the trail were brushy:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50092216386_2b894eeb7c_b.jpg\" alt=\"Tanner Lakes Loop Hike\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And there was some downfall:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50092214371_6b198a7321_b.jpg\" alt=\"Tanner Lakes Loop Hike\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Just before reaching East Tanner Lake at 1.4 miles there is an unmarked side trail heading to the right. Following this brought us to the Tanner Lakes Titan, the second biggest incense cedar in the world:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50092215876_f31f927a19_b.jpg\" alt=\"Tanner Lakes Loop Hike\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50091633238_65efe1e5e4_b.jpg\" alt=\"Tanner Lakes Loop Hike\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We retraced our steps back to the main trail and found the one opening in the shoreside brush from which to access\/view the lake where we took a short break:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50092448107_c77dec978f_b.jpg\" alt=\"East Tanner Lake\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50092217391_3f6c825464_b.jpg\" alt=\"Tanner Lakes Loop Hike\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Back into the woods on a gentle grade:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50092451262_f0908237b4_b.jpg\" alt=\"Tanner Lakes Loop Hike\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We passed a junction with an old trailhead at 2.2 miles (a short spur trail here leads out to a now-closed portion of Road 041):<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50092450607_eda0c0824f_b.jpg\" alt=\"Tanner Lakes Loop Hike\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We emerged into an open area:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50091646368_97ea0ff432_b.jpg\" alt=\"Tanner Lakes Trail\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We had a view of Swan Mountain here:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50092460857_b50a3e3b83_b.jpg\" alt=\"Tanner Lakes Trail\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50091669668_bc1c5da055_b.jpg\" alt=\"Tanner Lakes Trail\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At 3.7 miles we reached a junction were we stayed to the right, then a short distance later reached another junction where we turned right onto the Boundary Trail. Notice the big tree in the shot below.
