{"id":2437,"date":"2018-07-03T20:00:26","date_gmt":"2018-07-03T20:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/old.cherylhill.net\/blog\/?p=2437"},"modified":"2020-01-12T17:16:42","modified_gmt":"2020-01-12T17:16:42","slug":"eds-trail-on-silver-star-mountain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cherylhill.net\/blog\/2018\/07\/03\/eds-trail-on-silver-star-mountain\/","title":{"rendered":"Ed&#8217;s Trail on Silver Star Mountain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sunday, July 1, 2018<\/p>\n<p>Greg and I hiked up Silver Star <a href=\"http:\/\/cherylhill.net\/blog\/2018\/07\/02\/silver-star-mountain-via-grouse-vista\/\">last weekend<\/a> via the Grouse Vista Trailhead. Mom and Dad wanted to see the grand wildflower display on Silver Star Mountain. They don&#8217;t hike at all anymore and they wouldn&#8217;t have been able to handle the rough trail from Grouse Vista, so we knew we had to take them to the north side, even though the road is utter crap.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday Karl, Deb, Dad, Mom, and I piled into Karl&#8217;s truck and drove up there. Road 4109 is even worse than last year. I got my Outback up that road <a href=\"http:\/\/cherylhill.net\/blog\/2017\/07\/21\/silver-star-mountain-flower-bonanza\/\">last year<\/a>, but I probably wouldn&#8217;t have made it up this year. This is what the road looks like now, as photographed on our way down. This is the worst of the ditches:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1765\/43186715011_19cd3da436_c.jpg\" alt=\"Road 4109\" width=\"800\" height=\"482\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Nice driving, Karl! We made it! There was only one other truck there when we arrived at 8:30.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1786\/41340135390_1a6254481f_c.jpg\" alt=\"Silver Star Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately we were very much in the clouds with no views:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1829\/42432449144_9f71db363b_c.jpg\" alt=\"Silver Star Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We headed up the trail:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1769\/43150798051_4ed1228785_c.jpg\" alt=\"Silver Star Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1786\/42247617455_510f4db108_c.jpg\" alt=\"Silver Star Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There were wildflowers all over the place:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1808\/42247636305_f93fc36399_c.jpg\" alt=\"Silver Star Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/837\/42433443884_634c0daca5_c.jpg\" alt=\"Silver Star Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/843\/42247621985_b8d492df78_c.jpg\" alt=\"Silver Star Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Visibility was very limited:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/922\/28296036877_ed02001fd0_c.jpg\" alt=\"Silver Star Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The vegetation was sopping wet (we ran into some backpackers who said it rained pretty much all night), which had some beautiful effects:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1829\/28304413537_d4de7266ba_c.jpg\" alt=\"Silver Star Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We turned off of the old road and headed up Ed&#8217;s Trail. Normally you&#8217;d be able to see Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainier, and Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainier, and Mt. There were seven cars parked along the road, having bailed on their way up when it got too rough. So glad we were able to get Mom and Dad up there to see them.
