He was enforcing the campfire ban, checking permits, and reminding people about the wilderness rules. What a thankless job. He told us he also patrols Marion Lake and that people abandon broken tents and rafts there all the time. The previous weekend he had hauled out 40 pounds of garbage from there and ran into a hiker who also had picked up about 40 pounds worth of other people&#8217;s trash. WTH, people! Rangers and fellow hikers are not your maids. Pack out your damn trash.<\/p>\n<p>On to the photos.<\/p>\n<p>We got a later start than usual, hitting the trail at 1:40pm and crossing Whitewater Creek later in the day than we usually do. In the afternoon the creek was high and full of glacial sediment.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3728\/19837869714_17aa581ccb_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the PCT just before reaching Jefferson Park is a sign with an EXTREMELY bad map showing where the campsites are. (Before you go, print out <a href=\"\u201c=http:\/\/www.oregonhikers.org\/field_guide\/File:Jeffparkflier.jpg\u201d\">this much better map<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/480\/20434295946_4cf6b2b913_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are now signs throughout Jeff Park so it&#8217;s easier to find your way around the maze of trails. It&#8217;s about time! Jefferson:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5810\/20548802731_7c5398f079_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Peaceful morning at Bays Lake:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5617\/20533845162_b37db6e27b_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Since we had never been there before, we stopped by Park Lake on our way up Park Ridge:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5714\/19920071394_77f73ee604_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Crossing the outflow of Russell Lake. Bone dry!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5709\/20354692408_4fa25b36b0_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Park Ridge straight ahead:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5713\/20516553546_478f2bc6ff_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Looking north from Park Ridge at Mt. Jefferson from Park Ridge:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/531\/20259846108_e09ce16a10_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The snowfield just north of the ridge is all melted:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5666\/20354751998_4f00ba4580_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Attempting to follow Park Ridge over to Park Butte. We had hoped there would be a booth path, but there wasn&#8217;t, and the sandy rocky terrain made for slow going:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/512\/20259842088_ef394cb231_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/512\/19826947353_25b186d807_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We gave up on that and descended to the unnamed meltwater pond below:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5725\/20169006224_33f79ef429_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/767\/20603585818_ca26a21d0d_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Looking back up at where we were:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5668\/20782157882_c87947b6cc_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Heading cross country back to the trail:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/758\/20782145862_d2a7d2030a_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Saw a buck!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/639\/20782134032_09fcdf9a21_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Just about all the wildflowers are done and gone, but some gentian are still hanging around.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5677\/20791564885_8a42f39746_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We stopped and hung out at Russell Lake for awhile:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5832\/20765312516_1bcc8e8152_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/570\/20604806099_5e1c3682d5_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Back at Bays Lake Greg decided to go for a swim:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/599\/20604207320_cb69e2486f_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was pretty windy that evening, so there were no lake reflections, but we had a great sunset:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/714\/20605417839_51617b4112_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/672\/20169552984_296bf8f6d6_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/641\/20789322332_8a1ac37a9e_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Heading out the next day under overcast skies.
