None of us had ever been there, so we were looking forward to seeing this place we&#8217;d heard so much about!<\/p>\n<p>It was a gorgeous morning at Timberline Lodge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cheryl_hill\/7967325640\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8320\/7967325640_b92c5a599e_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We picked up the Timberline Trail and headed west.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cheryl_hill\/7967325850\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8451\/7967325850_2861dfd174_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Entering the wilderness.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cheryl_hill\/7967326040\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8458\/7967326040_060c8a2dbe_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Looking happy before we begin the LONG descent into Zigzag Canyon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cheryl_hill\/7967326416\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8450\/7967326416_336b424669_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was at that spot that we came across Barry, a very nice Forest Service volunteer who was counting hikers. Turns out that about 40-50% of hikers don&#8217;t fill out the mandatory wilderness permit, so the FS isn&#8217;t able to get an accurate count of how many people are hiking the trails here. Unfortunately this negatively impacts the funding that MHNF gets. So that&#8217;s why Barry was out there counting heads.<\/p>\n<p>Crossing the Zigzag River wasn&#8217;t a problem. But I would NOT attempt this without poles!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cheryl_hill\/7967326612\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8457\/7967326612_11d75b0b14_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After the long climb back out of the canyon we finally broke out of the trees and started hiking through the most awesome wildflower meadows. This place isn&#8217;t called Paradise Park for nothing! (Oh yeah, and we&#8217;d been munching on huckleberries along the trail as well. I thought it was strange that none of the stones were laying around. According to William Sullivan, the shelter was &#8220;smashed by a falling tree in 1994 and painstakingly removed.&#8221; Why would they do that? Why not let the pile of stones just be?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cheryl_hill\/7967472138\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8305\/7967472138_35c0c2dd21_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We set up camp a little ways downhill from the shelter remains and then set off to explore. The light on Mt. No rainclouds in sight! As we hiked out we stopped to enjoy the wildflower meadow a bit moret. Awesome!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cheryl_hill\/7971157688\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8305\/7971157688_344daa3e51_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Down below it was quite cloudy, but we were high above the clouds!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cheryl_hill\/7971157902\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8454\/7971157902_1f103d1f9c_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cheryl_hill\/7971158036\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8441\/7971158036_903e6395ff_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After the long descent, river crossing, and ascent out of Zigzag Canyon we stopped for a break on the canyon rim.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cheryl_hill\/7971319626\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8313\/7971319626_3ee767707c_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The trail was REALLY dusty in places.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cheryl_hill\/7971319848\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8449\/7971319848_f48a5739eb_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As we neared Timberline Lodge we got another view to the south and a giant cloud to the left of Mt. Jefferson that hadn&#8217;t been there two hours ago. Only it wasn&#8217;t a cloud, it was smoke from the Pole Creek Fire, which we would later learn. Yikes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cheryl_hill\/7971320002\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8181\/7971320002_b6e17f04b5_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yay, we made it!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cheryl_hill\/7971320216\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8170\/7971320216_22e9493fdf_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There was a lineup of cool old cars at the lodge. I&#8217;m not a car person by any stretch of the imagination but even I found all these old cars pretty cool.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cheryl_hill\/7971320412\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8315\/7971320412_6a0d195f20_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cheryl_hill\/7971320616\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8040\/7971320616_e61f4ebd1a_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We had worked up quite an appetite so we stopped at the Ice Axe Grill in Government Camp for delicious beer and food before heading home.
