Greg and I first visited the Devils Peak lookout in September 2012, almost exactly ten years ago. That time we hiked Hunchback Trail #793 from the end of very rough Road 2613. Today we decided to visit by hiking Cool Creek Trail #794 from Still Creek Road.
I’ll just write about the lookout here. If you want to read about the hike see my post on my adventure blog. After 3.5 miles and 3,070′ elevation gain we reached the junction with the Hunchback Trail. We turned right, then almost immediately turned left for the spur trail to the lookout:
After 3.6 miles and 3,140′ elevation gain I reached the lookout. Greg arrived a short while later:
Inside there are two beds and a woodstove:
Although it’s getting pretty overgrown, you can still see Mt. Hood from the doorway:
The only other view is to the southeast:
It’s interesting to compare the panorama photos from 1933 to how the “view” looks today. Looking southwest:
Looking southeast:
Looking north:
There’s a storage shed under the cabin:
There are tree stumps all over the place, presumably from people cutting down trees for firewood:
A group of four backpackers arrived and started propping open the shutters, which makes the place feel less abandoned:
The cabin is looking a little worse for wear. I don’t know how much (if any) maintenance it sees and I wouldn’t want to stay in there.
