I parked and started walking:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53117738053_710d38bd2d_b.jpg\" alt=\"Garwood Butte\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Someone had been up here this season and cleared some blowdown:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53117737133_6d9d86d1c4_b.jpg\" alt=\"Garwood Butte\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53117448479_1abb412923_b.jpg\" alt=\"Garwood Butte\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Apparently the guys with chainsaws didn&#8217;t make it this far. Good thing I didn&#8217;t try to drive since there was nowhere to turn around here:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53117736828_6006ecf09c_b.jpg\" alt=\"Garwood Butte\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After 1.1 miles of road hiking I reached the start of the trail, which was not marked in any way:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53117444819_7913724c88_b.jpg\" alt=\"Garwood Butte\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53116645372_490798f9ec_b.jpg\" alt=\"Garwood Butte\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I walked past the trail just a little bit and saw that there is a wide spot to park if you manage to drive this far:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53117444914_1a0244bdb1_b.jpg\" alt=\"Garwood Butte\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The trail was in surprisingly good shape:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53117244106_07c0876047_b.jpg\" alt=\"Garwood Butte\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I saw this lovely patch of phlox:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53117688658_acaa9349b9_b.jpg\" alt=\"Garwood Butte\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I saw plenty of evidence of dirt bikes coming up here. In this spot they had caused some damage and erosion by cutting the switchback:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53117655525_f45c8776be_b.jpg\" alt=\"Garwood Butte\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Almost to the lookout:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53117688723_f21f494dd9_b.jpg\" alt=\"Garwood Butte\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Made it!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53117606645_26413bfb34_b.jpg\" alt=\"Garwood Butte\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I was surprised and delighted to see this sign on the lookout that said &#8220;Rehab in progress. Please leave things as they are. For info: Angie Snyder, N. Ump. Dist.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53116598037_1630efb0b6_b.jpg\" alt=\"Garwood Butte\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Getting the Forest Service to answer my questions is always difficult, but I later learned that this sign is old and outdated. Angie retired back in 2015. It sounded like there is no work currently being done on the lookout. It wasn&#8217;t possible to raise the shutters, but the door was unlocked so by crouching on the catwalk I could see inside beneath the bottom of the shutters through the open doorway. Bailey, which was once the site of a lookout. Rather than hike the road back I tried the old trail, which turned out to be pretty easy to follow:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53117651350_b5b61a7042_b.jpg\" alt=\"Garwood Butte\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This trail shortcuts a switchback in the road so when I reached the road again I followed it back to my car. After that I explored the lower section of trail that shows up on the map between Roads 3703 and 370.
