{"id":4815,"date":"2023-08-05T03:06:04","date_gmt":"2023-08-05T03:06:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cherylhill.net\/blog\/?p=4815"},"modified":"2023-08-17T03:22:08","modified_gmt":"2023-08-17T03:22:08","slug":"barklow-mountain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cherylhill.net\/blog\/2023\/08\/05\/barklow-mountain\/","title":{"rendered":"Barklow Mountain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Monday, July 3, 2023<\/p>\n<p>While staying at <a href=\"http:\/\/cherylhill.net\/firelookouts\/2023\/08\/01\/bald-knob\/\">Bald Knob Lookout<\/a> we did several hikes, and the day before heading home we hiked up Barklow Mountain.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a trail that comes in from the west, but it was far more convenient for us to approach from the east, so we started at the trailhead on Road 3353:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53084867797_704b9bc5d0_c.jpg\" alt=\"Barklow Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The trail launched straight up the mountain. Needless to say it was some very steep climbing:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53085845445_9e6a4720ee_c.jpg\" alt=\"Barklow Mountain Hike\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53084869157_bf150c8d87_c.jpg\" alt=\"Barklow Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t think this trail sees any maintenance, so it&#8217;s good we only encountered a few blowdown:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53085848335_c97d4d2e01_c.jpg\" alt=\"Barklow Mountain Hike\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After gaining 530&#8242; in 0.4 miles we reached the ridge and turned right. This was easier hiking, but the trail is clearly not used much:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53085931883_12eaaeda21_c.jpg\" alt=\"Barklow Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At some point along the ridge we crossed over into the Copper Salmon Wilderness, although there was no sign stating that. We could see to the south and southwest and that was it:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53085852040_35befa20c7_c.jpg\" alt=\"Barklow Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53085851810_5107900242_c.jpg\" alt=\"Barklow Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53085441291_5815d24075_c.jpg\" alt=\"Barklow Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After spending a bit of time at the summit we hiked back down:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53085848785_816ca07059_c.jpg\" alt=\"Barklow Mountain Hike\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53085437991_f50f8d7840_c.jpg\" alt=\"Barklow Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We decided to head south towards Iron Mountain on Road 3353 on our way out, instead of back north and east. This proved to be a good decision for two reasons: 1) there had been a few sketchy wash-out sections on our drive to the trailhead that we were in no hurry to experience again, and 2) on the west side of Iron Mountain we drove past this HUGE roadside patch of darlingtonia:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53085935768_158106c6de_c.jpg\" alt=\"Darlingtonia\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53085433706_60e184bf71_c.jpg\" alt=\"Darlingtonia\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53085851225_b0568fb14c_c.jpg\" alt=\"Darlingtonia\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53084873127_7a8ea5805f_c.jpg\" alt=\"Darlingtonia\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The hike up to Barklow is not worth doing.
