{"id":4750,"date":"2023-06-29T13:42:29","date_gmt":"2023-06-29T13:42:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cherylhill.net\/blog\/?p=4750"},"modified":"2023-06-29T13:53:26","modified_gmt":"2023-06-29T13:53:26","slug":"eureka-wagon-road","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cherylhill.net\/blog\/2023\/06\/29\/eureka-wagon-road\/","title":{"rendered":"Eureka Wagon Road"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wednesday, June 21, 2023<\/p>\n<p>During my visit to northeast Oregon I hiked part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonhikers.org\/field_guide\/Eureka_Viewpoint_Hike\">Eureka Wagon Road hike<\/a>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This hike follows the route of the old Eureka Wagon Road, which was built in 1902 to access the mines at Eureka Bar far below along the Snake River. The road is now a trail, and although you can follow it all the way down to the river, most people don&#8217;t go that far.<\/p>\n<p>Before starting the hike I visited the Buckhorn Overlook, which has a great view into the canyon of the Imnaha River:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53009876270_b45b16a7a9_c.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" alt=\"Buckhorn Overlook\"\/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53009971433_4555cb266a_c.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" alt=\"Buckhorn Overlook\"\/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s also an old abandoned fire lookout here:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53009656059_7daa82c85e_c.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" alt=\"Buckhorn Overlook\"\/><\/p>\n<p>From the overlook Road 780 heads downhill to the trailhead. width=\"533\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I was glad this wasn&#8217;t a hot day, because this is very exposed with no shade:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Having gotten my fill of wildflowers and views I turned around here:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" Wagon Road Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>An old road forks to the left and the Cemetery Ridge Trail follows another old road, forking uphill to the right:<\/p>\n<p><img width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then I turned around and headed back to the car. This turned out to be a lovely stroll with lots of wildflowers.
