That time we hiked in from the end of road 2613. The hike is quite short, but that road is awful. I&#8217;ve always been curious to try the more common route that people take, the Cool Creek Trail. I knew it was steep but I was right.<\/p>\n<p>The trailhead is on Still Creek Road:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52437581854_9c11835c79_c.jpg\" alt=\"Devils Peak Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We entered the Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness immediately:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52436800457_c8a5a5642a_c.jpg\" alt=\"Devils Peak Hike\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The day was warm and sunny and we were grateful for the shade:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52437373129_a700e6c659_c.jpg\" alt=\"Devils Peak Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We saw signs of trail maintenance this season which was good:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52436799582_cbe103df08_c.jpg\" alt=\"Devils Peak Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>About 1.2 miles into the hike we had a nice view of Mt. Hood:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52437547100_0146c98c46_c.jpg\" alt=\"Devils Peak Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s Zigzag Mountain to the left of Mt. Hood<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52437613468_3cb015f8a8_c.jpg\" alt=\"Devils Peak Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Tom, Dick, and Harry Mountain to the right of Mt. Hood:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52437371064_159f37f472_c.jpg\" alt=\"Devils Peak Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Climbing steeply:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52437640108_9b8b3e3e03_c.jpg\" alt=\"Devils Peak Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We saw old trail blazes on the trees. This is how they used to mark the route of trails back in the day:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52437757040_44a67a7964_c.jpg\" alt=\"Devils Peak Hike\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There is a lot of rhododendron here. This would be beautiful when it blooms in June:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52437301761_af640380bd_c.jpg\" alt=\"Devils Peak Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52437395229_2e95121b00_c.jpg\" alt=\"Devils Peak Hike\" width=\"533\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A few trees here and there had fallen since the trail crew came through and we had to climb over:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52436798157_d042a550b4_c.jpg\" alt=\"Devils Peak Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After 3.5 miles and 3,070&#8242; elevation gain I reached the junction with the Hunchback Trail. (Greg had stayed behind to talk to some friends we ran into. After conversing with them a bit I had continued so I didn&#8217;t lose my momentum.) Ie turned right, then almost immediately turned left for the spur trail to the lookout:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52436811557_138030ab57_c.jpg\" alt=\"Devils Peak Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After 3.6 miles and 3,140&#8242; elevation gain I reached the lookout:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52437569420_edf75ae52c_c.jpg\" alt=\"Devils Peak Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52437568180_4ce1486760_c.jpg\" alt=\"Devils Peak Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52437264021_c3b0ec4ac0_c.jpg\" alt=\"Devils Peak Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The lookout is available to stay in first-come first-serve. I think people try to keep it somewhat clean, but it&#8217;s still pretty grungy inside. There are two beds and a woodstove:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52437835933_4c7969298b_c.jpg\" alt=\"Devils Peak Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52437769465_aaee1f4685_c.jpg\" alt=\"Devils Peak Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Although it&#8217;s getting pretty overgrown, you can still see Mt. Hood from the doorway:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52437668743_1f43fa4009_c.jpg\" alt=\"Devils Peak Hike\" width=\"534\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52437664568_3637a50cd9_c.jpg\" alt=\"Devils Peak Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The only other view is to the southeast:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52437605840_1425d91522_c.jpg\" alt=\"Devils Peak Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s interesting to compare the panorama photos from 1933 to how the &#8220;view&#8221; looks today. On the way back down we took detour north along the Hunchback Trail to find the nearby campsite and spring I had heard about. We found the campsite, but couldn&#8217;t find the spring:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52436807887_ce33be9c95_c.jpg\" alt=\"Devils Peak Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We headed back to the Cool Creek Trail and began our descent. On the way down we took a short side trail to a viewpoint:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52436810047_57a6a8314a_c.jpg\" alt=\"Devils Peak Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The views here are WAY better than at the lookout. Mt. Hood is clearly visible to the northeast. Hood:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52436802377_a10914b43c_c.jpg\" alt=\"Devils Peak Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The long ridge of Zigzag Mountain to the west of Mt. Hood:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52437825878_e2e6aa5cfd_c.jpg\" alt=\"Devils Peak Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The descent on the steep trail was pretty punishing, as we knew it would be.
