St. Helens weekend was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wta.org\/go-hiking\/hikes\/plains-of-abraham-windy-pass-loop\">Plains of Abraham loop<\/a>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>We drove out Road 99 to its end at Windy Ridge. We had a partial view of Spirit Lake from the parking lot:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52224589351_de7d89456b_c.jpg\" alt=\"Windy Ridge Viewpoint\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Before our hike we climbed the stairs to the viewpoint:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52224613683_1f4d810474_c.jpg\" alt=\"Stairs at Windy Ridge\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52223591397_6dd809773a_c.jpg\" alt=\"Stairs at Windy Ridge\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Up here we had a better view of Spirit Lake:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52223593407_df19bc26f7_c.jpg\" alt=\"Windy Ridge Viewpoint\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And of course Mt. Looking back at the stairs from a distance:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52228364118_b3ff0b83ca_c.jpg\" alt=\"Plains of Abraham Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Technically the road continues past the parking lot but its gated. junction where the Abraham Trail heads off to the left, which you see in the photo below:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" environments, even though it&#8217;s been 42 years since the eruption:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52228633474_b94c025783_c.jpg\" alt=\"Plains of Abraham Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We reached the junction with the Loowit Trail and turned left:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52228843515_3140d97ff3_c.jpg\" alt=\"Plains of Abraham Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is the closest I&#8217;ve ever been to the mountain before:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52228856145_f877ccaec6_c.jpg\" alt=\"Plains of Abraham Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This section required a bit of route-fiding:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52228370483_c472057e48_c.jpg\" alt=\"Plains of Abraham Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then we climbed up this very section of trail to the pass:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We reached Windy Pass, then descended down the other side. This trail was very narrow and sandy. That&#8217;s the Plains of Abraham below us:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52227355832_3c47747ce3_c.jpg\" alt=\"Plains of Abraham Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We crossed a creek after descending from the pass and the water was surprisingly clear:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52228369203_91d1e03735_c.jpg\" alt=\"Plains of Abraham Hike\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Back on flat ground again:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52228369033_c2ab02165a_c.jpg\" alt=\"Plains of Abraham Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Looking back to the mountain, partially hiding in clouds:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52227355337_3fa47a93df_c.jpg\" alt=\"Plains of Abraham Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then we reached the junction where we turned left onto the Abraham Trail. Unfortunately they don&#8217;t always stay on trail. A parting shot of Mt.
