With an atmospheric river and A LOT of rain affecting much of the state, I headed to southern Oregon to try and find some dry weather.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>My first stop was the <a href=\"https:\/\/stateparks.oregon.gov\/index.cfm?do=park.profile&amp;parkId=189\">Golden State Heritage Site<\/a>. Golden started off as a mining camp and grew to a town by 1890. It was unique for not having any saloons, but it did have two churches.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52151353647_007cb2f234_c.jpg\" Heritage Site\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There is a signboard with a map showing were buildings were once located:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52152604619_9ae11e6569_c.jpg\" alt=\"Golden State Heritage Site\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>School, store, and granary:<\/p>\n<p><img the trees you can see down to the ponds on Coyote Creek below, which is where I was headed next:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52152603624_9fd70321e6_c.jpg\" alt=\"Golden State Heritage Site\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There is a trail down to those ponds, which is part of the Golden Coyote Wetlands:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52163384865_688b7e4ef8_c.jpg\" alt=\"Golden Coyote Wetlands\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Much of the trail is actually just an old road:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The trail ends at this gate along the road. This gate is also a failed attempt at keeping vehicles out, as they simply drive through the forest to get around the gate:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52161862777_c85611d6c9_c.jpg\" alt=\"Golden Coyote Wetlands\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And I certainly saw plenty of evidence of recent vehicles driving in here:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52162884323_109ef0da8b_c.jpg\" alt=\"Golden Coyote Wetlands\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52163372110_980f12a35a_c.jpg\" alt=\"Golden Coyote Wetlands\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Despite the trash and the damage caused by illegal vehicles, it was still a pleasant spot:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52163371205_e9bf7e646f_c.jpg\" alt=\"Golden Coyote Wetlands\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52162879391_5efc0aa6de_c.jpg\" alt=\"Golden Coyote Wetlands\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My next stop was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blm.gov\/or\/resources\/recreation\/files\/brochures\/London_Peak.pdf\">London Peak<\/a>. There was a threat of rain even down in southern Oregon so rather than camp I had booked a cabin near Howard Prairie Lake. This boat ramp is closed because Howard Prairie Lake no longer exists here. (I later found an <a href=\"https:\/\/ktvl.com\/news\/local\/where-have-the-famous-southern-oregon-lakes-gone\">article<\/a> about this.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52162992891_f74f0b4905_c.jpg\" alt=\"Howard Prairie Lake\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I walked down to the dry lake bed. The road was snow-free, but there were still a few patches on the hike up to the summit as I followed the barely-visible route of a former roadbed:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52163025038_27e8251d58_c.jpg\" alt=\"Old Baldy\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52163265229_dffc0e044f_c.jpg\" alt=\"Old Baldy\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I found the geocache and had a look around. I could see the bottom of Mt.
