{"id":4177,"date":"2022-03-27T14:34:55","date_gmt":"2022-03-27T14:34:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cherylhill.net\/blog\/?p=4177"},"modified":"2023-08-07T03:12:34","modified_gmt":"2023-08-07T03:12:34","slug":"lorena-butte-lookout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cherylhill.net\/blog\/2022\/03\/27\/lorena-butte-lookout\/","title":{"rendered":"Lorena Butte Lookout"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Friday, March 4 &#8211; Sunday, March 6, 2022<\/p>\n<p>This weekend was a first for us: we rented a lookout operated not by the U.S. Forest Service but by a private landowner.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In November I saw a post in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/2057957770941596\">Fire Lookouts of Washington Facebook group<\/a> that the Lorena Butte Lookout was available to rent. Lorena Butte is on private land outside of Goldendale, WA and the old 1974 lookout has been moved from the summit to a different spot on the butte. Recently the owners have fixed it up. I contacted the owners to find out about renting it and chose the first weekend in March. By the way, you can see photos and history <a href=\"http:\/\/www.willhiteweb.com\/washington_fire_lookouts\/lorena_butte_lookout\/goldendale_232.htm\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/washingtonlookouts.weebly.com\/lorena-butte.html\">here<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.firelookout.com\/wa\/lorena.html\">here<\/a>. (UPDATE: This lookout has now been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hipcamp.com\/en-US\/land\/washington-lorena-butte-lookout-tower-qeoh0nk1\">listed on Hipcamp<\/a> for rental.)<\/p>\n<p>We arrived at the ranch house on Friday and we were immediately greeted by this sweet old farm dog:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51924603500_347572370a_c.jpg\" alt=\"Lorena Butte Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Paulette drove ahead of us and led us up the road to the cabin. These next two pictures were taken later in the weekend. You can see the cabin at left below:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51926719610_8d3563f9a1_c.jpg\" alt=\"Lorena Butte Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are a few rough spots on the road. A sedan could probably make it with careful driving, but I was glad we had high clearance:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51946259214_30548cb835_c.jpg\" alt=\"The road to Lorena Butte\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The cabin interior is nice, with new floors and even a rug! There&#8217;s no bed so we brought our camping cots. We also brought our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/product\/662980\/cleanwaste-go-anywhere-portable-toilet-seat\">camping toilet<\/a> because there&#8217;s no toilet up here:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51924309584_6a298c1204_c.jpg\" alt=\"Lorena Butte Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51923001142_04fd123efe_c.jpg\" alt=\"Lorena Butte Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a nice big deck that they&#8217;ve built, but it was too cold during our visit to sit out here:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51924603140_aeec9b52a3_c.jpg\" alt=\"Lorena Butte Lookout\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mt. Adams\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Paulette told us to text if we needed anything and left us to it. After we unloaded some gear we drove into Goldendale and did a walk on the trail network on Observatory Hill:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51926421554_b217605f2c_c.jpg\" alt=\"Observatory Hill\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From there we could see Lorena Butte with a big &#8220;G&#8221; for Goldendale on the side of it, which we hadn&#8217;t realized was there. We enjoyed our stay here, although it was quite a bit different from staying in a remote Forest Service lookout since there was highway noise and a town right below.
