{"id":3498,"date":"2020-11-05T21:00:40","date_gmt":"2020-11-05T21:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cherylhill.net\/blog\/?p=3498"},"modified":"2020-12-25T00:21:05","modified_gmt":"2020-12-25T00:21:05","slug":"lookingglass-lake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cherylhill.net\/blog\/2020\/11\/05\/lookingglass-lake\/","title":{"rendered":"Lookingglass Lake"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sunday, September 27, 2020<\/p>\n<p>Today Greg and I headed to the Stagman Ridge Trailhead in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in order to visit Lookingglass Lake.<!--more--> It was a chilly 43 degrees when we arrived at 9:45:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50548186991_f7ab503f29_c.jpg\" alt=\"Stagman Ridge Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The first part of the hike starts out on an old:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50548186136_5eda0f5ef5_c.jpg\" alt=\"Stagman Ridge Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We passed the Mt. Adams Wilderness boundary at 0.6 miles and entered the burn area from the 2012 Cascade Creek Fire:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50548319667_6fe7158bbb_c.jpg\" alt=\"Stagman Ridge Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50547452228_9f3896e7a8_c.jpg\" alt=\"Stagman Ridge Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50548188451_1860e0fe79_c.jpg\" alt=\"Stagman Ridge Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We passed two men with overnight packs on their way out. I asked if it got cold up there last night and one of them said \u201cvery\u201c. He said it was wet too.<\/p>\n<p>We continued up Stagman Ridge, hiking through burned trees. We could now see Mt. Adams through the snags. It had a big cloud on it:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50548188451_1860e0fe79_c.jpg\" alt=\"Stagman Ridge Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50548187686_4cc3db9a15_c.jpg\" alt=\"Stagman Ridge Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50547593178_898f1fa72c_c.jpg\" alt=\"Stagman Ridge Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50548323841_da3684f716_c.jpg\" alt=\"Stagman Ridge Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The trail descended down into an unburnt area:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50548322906_c5b575c8ea_c.jpg\" alt=\"Stagman Ridge Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then the trail ascended again. This was pretty much the only good fall color we saw all day:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50548462167_c483c0277a_c.jpg\" alt=\"Stagman Ridge Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50548328571_120651b630_c.jpg\" alt=\"Stagman Ridge Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At 3.1 miles the trail traverses a large meadow with Mount Adams blooming above the trees on the far side:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50548327931_b80613ff28_c.jpg\" alt=\"Stagman Ridge Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50548777222_23fe37302f_c.jpg\" alt=\"Mt. Hood\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We reached the junction with the Graveyard Camp Trail at 3.5 miles:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50548643261_201149e835_c.jpg\" alt=\"Graveyard Camp\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At the junction we saw big tracks in the mud. I have no idea what creature made these:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50548642536_f056dec626_c.jpg\" alt=\"Big animal prints\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We had to navigate some blowdown along this stretch, as well as dip in and out of several gullies:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50548646371_43e7fb0610_c.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We got a glimpse of Mt. St. Helens:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50548778017_513e88a072_c.jpg\" alt=\"Mt. St. Helens\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At 4.3 miles we crossed the creek:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50555668033_95c5035536_c.jpg\" alt=\"Hiking to Lookingglass Lake\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50555677133_3bfc6547f8_c.jpg\" alt=\"Hiking to Lookingglass Lake\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The junction for the spur trail to Lookingglass Lake is right after the creek. Unfortunately the lake burned in the fire, but it was still a pleasant spot:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50555682078_386b8e57ac_c.jpg\" alt=\"Lookingglass Lake\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We found a spot to sit and enjoy the view. It was 60 degrees in shade at 1pm. Not too bad for late September!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50556506051_3aa55ab019_c.jpg\" alt=\"Lookingglass Lake\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s one spot at the lake where you can see Mt. Hood\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After soaking up the sun at the lake for awhile, we continued on:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50570023196_00b0ec1ee0_c.jpg\" alt=\"Mt. Adams\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another view of Mt. St. Helens\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We crossed the creek again:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50570158077_91792ca34c_c.jpg\" alt=\"Creek crossing\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After hiking 0.8 miles from the lake we reached the Round the Mountain Trail and turned left. Adams\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We turned left off the PCT onto the Stagman Ridge Trail:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50570005153_03fd5a58b3_c.jpg\" alt=\"Stagman Ridge Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was 0.8 miles to the Graveyard Camp junction, then 3.5 miles back to the car.
