I paid to park at Wildwood Recreation Site so I could hike the Boulder Ridge Trail up to Huckleberry Mountain. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The trail starts at this signboard near the restrooms:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48787899368_8fc7816ff1_c.jpg\" alt=\"Huckleberry Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then crosses the Sandy River on this huge footbridge:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48788261461_536f208c93_c.jpg\" alt=\"Huckleberry Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48787895593_5d682de24f_c.jpg\" alt=\"Huckleberry Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After a flat stretch through the forest the trail starts switchbacking steeply uphill:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48787892173_46fa7654c7_c.jpg\" alt=\"Huckleberry Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At 1.9 miles the trail starts following the path of a very old road bed:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48788398532_bba56e2b81_c.jpg\" alt=\"Huckleberry Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At 2.5 miles I crossed the wilderness boundary:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48788252196_77c6051e6a_c.jpg\" alt=\"Huckleberry Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There is a viewpoint at three miles, but it was too cloudy for views:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48787887068_64024b3dc8_c.jpg\" alt=\"Huckleberry Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48787886188_ef6100182b_c.jpg\" alt=\"Huckleberry Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I was seeing lots of different kinds of mushrooms and in great abundance:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48788223886_1079cff0eb_c.jpg\" alt=\"Huckleberry Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48788387542_f30887d401_c.jpg\" alt=\"Huckleberry Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48788367742_1cdca8a226_c.jpg\" alt=\"Huckleberry Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48788221641_a04773877e_c.jpg\" alt=\"Huckleberry Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48788220296_276bcfc1cd_c.jpg\" alt=\"Huckleberry Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48788364502_d222e90a4c_c.jpg\" alt=\"Huckleberry Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m pretty sure these were chanterelles, but I didn&#8217;t pick any:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48788228496_3161428281_c.jpg\" alt=\"Huckleberry Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The trail kept climbing up through the forest:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48788226976_84ef03c543_c.jpg\" alt=\"Huckleberry Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48788214231_f88564d80b_c.jpg\" alt=\"Huckleberry Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After 5.1 miles I reached the junction with the Plaza Trail where I turned right:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48788356542_cfe75bfc7f_c.jpg\" alt=\"Huckleberry Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Plaza Trail used to continue to the left and descended down to a trailhead near Welches and the golf course, and the Arrah Wanna Trail used to descend to a trailhead on E. Crystal Creek Road. Because both of those trails crossed private land at the bottom they have both been abandoned by the Forest Service, but you can see where they used to be on the 1962 USGS map below. The Boulder Ridge Trail hadn&#8217;t been built yet, so it&#8217;s not on this map. The spot where I hooked up with the Plaza Trail is right near the tip of the &#8220;n&#8221; of &#8220;Mtn&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48776759942_56b5384a5b_c.jpg\" alt=\"OldPlazaTrail2\" width=\"737\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Plaza Trail heads southwest along the ridge:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48787847088_8467e0d41c_c.jpg\" alt=\"Huckleberry Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While Huckleberry Mountain never had a fire lookout, nearby Wildcat Mountain and Salmon Mountain did. I saw bits of the old phone line that used to run along here, as well as on old insulator:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48787845203_31bd928a7c_c.jpg\" alt=\"Huckleberry Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I came across a survey marker alongside the trail:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48788351897_f0a14f0460_c.jpg\" alt=\"Huckleberry Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After 6.2 miles of hiking I finally reached the viewpoint on Huckleberry Mountain. The true summit is another half mile down the trail, but it apparently has no view. This is a view to the southwest with Wildcat Mountain at center:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48787854148_b74cff2a94_c.jpg\" alt=\"Huckleberry Mountain View\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>View to the south. Hood view was not looking promising:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48788388882_a327a66912_c.jpg\" alt=\"Huckleberry Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But the clouds slowly started breaking up:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48788235051_cdbc2e0248_c.jpg\" alt=\"Huckleberry Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The clouds never parted completely but I did get a pretty good view of Mt. On the way down the lower viewpoint was now mostly cloud-free.
