So I headed up to the Boulder Lake Trailhead to do the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonhikers.org\/field_guide\/Boulder_Lakes_Hike\">Boulder Lake loop<\/a> with a side trip to Bonney Butte.<\/p>\n<p>I set off up the trail and quickly passed Spinning Lake:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7909\/47427018062_4e0cd7f15d_c.jpg\" alt=\"Spinning Lake\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then I reached Boulder Lake, which is a very popular place to camp, but which was nice and quiet today:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7824\/32538008357_ac4b78fd7e_c.jpg\" alt=\"Boulder Lake\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I turned south and soon passed Little Boulder Lake:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7870\/32538007097_5a161163c4_c.jpg\" alt=\"Little Boulder Lake\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After Little Boulder Lake a bit of road-walking on Road 123 is required. I saw some very nice fall color:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7863\/46756622024_3cd0b96098_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fall color\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7842\/32538006187_05332d35ae_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fall color\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7862\/46756620534_374bbea20d_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fall color\" width=\"533\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7811\/47480053581_43d5d397cf_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fall color\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7843\/33603345168_db4d7c525a_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fall color\" width=\"533\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I even saw a few larches, which aren&#8217;t that common around here:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7898\/46756619294_af9e893fde_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fall color\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7905\/33603345848_55c0a2bb15_c.jpg\" alt=\"Fall color\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I picked up the Forest Creek Trail and headed north:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7917\/47480049501_a91c567302_c.jpg\" alt=\"Forest Creek Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a spot where you can looking down on Boulder Lake. That&#8217;s Grasshopper Point beyond:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7849\/46564763135_628a1eddf2_c.jpg\" alt=\"Boulder Lake\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There were a few larches down there turning color:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7924\/46564761965_af0357c3d7_c.jpg\" alt=\"Larches\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Further along is another viewpoint called Echo Point. That&#8217;s Badger Butte, right of center:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7861\/46564760175_d18725fcfd_c.jpg\" alt=\"Badger Butte\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then I reached Bonney Meadows where I had a view of the top of Mt. Hood:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7908\/46564759355_5c3a25ed93_c.jpg\" alt=\"Mt. Hood\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I walked through Bonney Meadows Campground:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7853\/46564758405_5677d0f449_c.jpg\" alt=\"Bonney Meadows Campground\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then I turned north on Road 4891 until I reached the old gated spur road up to Bonney Butte and turned left. (People can, and do, drive 4891 but it&#8217;s unmaintained and ROUGH.) Just before reaching the summit I got a view of Mt. Jefferson\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From the top there are great views of Mt. Hood\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Fall color down along the White River:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7913\/40513938093_b728fe2086_c.jpg\" alt=\"White River\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Every fall HawkWatch International has people stationed up here during the raptor migration to count and band birds. They have a board where you can see what they&#8217;ve done so far this year:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7844\/40513937263_593ff43780_c.jpg\" alt=\"Raptor count\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After lingering on the summit for awhile I hiked back down. I had hiked here before, but that was in summer.
