I was unavailable on Saturday, so today was my only day to head down and hike Bachelor and Coffin Mountains. It&#8217;s a five-hour round-trip drive from where we live, but Greg and I headed out Sunday morning.<\/p>\n<p>On Road 1168 to the trailhead we passed a nice patch of beargrass alongside the road. This has been a great year for beargrass:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48144026286_5e255e5ae6_c.jpg\" alt=\"Wildflowers\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48144117097_90971a82c7_c.jpg\" alt=\"Wildflowers\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48144116337_b65f407a5d_c.jpg\" alt=\"Wildflowers\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Further along we passed another great flower patch, this time with rhododendrons and beargrass:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48144114872_a38e7c43ef_c.jpg\" alt=\"Wildflowers\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There was also a big patch of monkey flower:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48144022751_e09c86b005_c.jpg\" alt=\"Wildflowers\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I spent about ten minutes taking pictures, then I was ready to go. But Greg took 30 minutes to thoroughly document the entire area:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48144113187_43f0e261c6_c.jpg\" alt=\"Wildflowers\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We passed yet another roadside patch, this time full of delphinium:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48144042701_7afa5f7c08_c.jpg\" alt=\"Wildflowers\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48144133547_5f30d52ee2_c.jpg\" alt=\"Wildflowers\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48144131877_5ef419def6_c.jpg\" alt=\"Wildflowers\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At the Bachelor Mountain trailhead we discovered that someone had inconsiderately built a fire ring right in the parking area. Seriously? I cleaned it up:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48144643182_9d93ae4cfc_c.jpg\" alt=\"Bachelor Mountain Trailhead\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48144642207_60fe3a941f_c.jpg\" alt=\"Bachelor Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From the trailhead we could see the Coffin Mountain lookout perched high above us:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48144039811_8710a841d4_c.jpg\" alt=\"Coffin Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Just five minutes up the trail we got our first sweeping view, including a view of the huge beargrass meadow on Coffin that we would <a href=\"http:\/\/cherylhill.net\/blog\/2019\/07\/02\/coffin-mountain-2\/\">visit later in the day<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48144039226_5253755bd3_c.jpg\" alt=\"Coffin Mountain\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mt. There were three people up there with their off-leash dog, who kept wandering around the summit while they kept shouting, &#8220;Dylan! Here Dylan!&#8221; The dog completely ignored them. Since your dog is not under voice control, how about trying a leash next time?<\/p>\n<p>Mt. Jefferson now had a cloud in front of it:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48144470201_aedf464d7d_c.jpg\" alt=\"Bachelor Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There was a good view of the area that burned in the 2017 Whitewater Fire:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48144461746_f1b90a5054_c.jpg\" alt=\"Bachelor Mountain Hike\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The views aren&#8217;t quite 360-degrees since there are trees, but you can still see a lot. Mt.
