{"id":2518,"date":"2018-08-10T15:10:30","date_gmt":"2018-08-10T15:10:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/old.cherylhill.net\/blog\/?p=2518"},"modified":"2018-08-17T19:31:32","modified_gmt":"2018-08-17T19:31:32","slug":"ice-lake-and-the-matterhorn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cherylhill.net\/blog\/2018\/08\/10\/ice-lake-and-the-matterhorn\/","title":{"rendered":"Ice Lake and the Matterhorn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sunday, July 29 &#8211; Tuesday, July 31, 2018<\/p>\n<p>Greg and I have been wanting to do the hike to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oregonhikers.org\/field_guide\/Ice_Lake_Hike\">Ice Lake<\/a> for quite awhile and we finally made it happen this summer.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/933\/43238863324_404d023f99_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake panorama\" width=\"800\" height=\"328\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On Saturday the 28th we left Portland and headed east, arriving in Enterprise at 3:45pm and driving down Hurricane Creek Road to look for a campsite. All the dispersed sites were taken, so we just pitched our tent at the Hurricane Creek Trailhead. This trailhead is used by equestrians, so it was a bit stinky, but it was just for one night. The cooler temps sure were nice! It had been in the mid-80s in Enterprise but back in the canyon it was in the mid-70s.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1831\/43157890644_d8b2f8bed7_c.jpg\" alt=\"Campsite\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The trailhead parking was a little bit above the creek. We grabbed our chairs and headed down there to chill out. Very pleasant!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/935\/43157890414_b41f08d16b_c.jpg\" alt=\"Hurricane Creek\" width=\"800\" height=\"656\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1791\/43157890504_477e480c84_c.jpg\" alt=\"Hurricane Creek\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We could see Sacajewea Peak up the canyon:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/935\/43157890604_e2a3c94bcd_c.jpg\" alt=\"Hurricane Creek\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sunday morning we broke camp and headed over to the Wallowa Lake Trailhead where we parked the car, put on our packs (mine was 33.5 pounds, Greg&#8217;s was 32.4), and hit the trail at 9:40am. The first few miles are along the West Fork Wallowa River:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1779\/43883502441_2549f6c570_c.jpg\" alt=\"Hiking to Ice Lake\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1832\/28946728177_6ff30ab8d6_c.jpg\" alt=\"Hiking to Ice Lake\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Passing the wilderness boundary:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1833\/42991968725_0f2782765c_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Occasionally we had a good view of the river:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1817\/43883494911_344bb91654_c.jpg\" alt=\"Hiking to Ice Lake\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But mostly we were just in the brush:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1811\/42087632740_2410e500e0_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Stopping to admire the peaks above:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1811\/28946921217_bbfb5e989f_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After hiking for 90 minutes and 2.9 miles we reached the junction with the Ice Lake Trail:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/860\/29025186257_c10f9ba0da_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We crossed the river on this log bridge:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1813\/43165950844_6c17dc26c7_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There used to be a much bigger bridge at this crossing but it was wiped out in 2011:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oregonhikers.org\/field_guide\/West_Fork_Wallowa-Ice_Lake_Trail_Junction\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oregonhikers.org\/w\/images\/2\/2e\/IceLakeJct1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>Photo by John Sparks<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Downstream of the current bridge is a mess of logs and trees and I think maybe parts of the old bridge are in this mess:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/935\/43909077692_8aa090b706_c.jpg\" alt=\"Broken bridge\" width=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This video shows a crew putting in the new bridge in the fall of 2012. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waterfallsnorthwest.com\/\">Northwest Waterfall Survey<\/a> there are four waterfalls on Adam Creek: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waterfallsnorthwest.com\/waterfall\/Lower-Adam-Creek-Falls-3949\">Lower Adam Creek Falls<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waterfallsnorthwest.com\/waterfall\/Beauty-Falls-3848\">Beauty Falls<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waterfallsnorthwest.com\/waterfall\/Middle-Adam-Creek-Falls-3787\">Middle Adam Creek Falls<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waterfallsnorthwest.com\/waterfall\/Ice-Falls-3919\">Ice Falls<\/a>. I believe this one is Lower Adam Creek Falls:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/938\/43166179854_f2d1b2be0e_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then we continued climbing. Thank goodness for the numerous switchbacks and the well-graded trail, which made the elevation gain more bearable:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1840\/28946886677_3d54670664_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1773\/43883689791_fd9648ed81_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/932\/28946876507_3129e39123_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We passed another waterfall. I think this one is Beauty Falls (and off in the distance you can see another waterfall further upstream on Adam Creek, which may be Ice Falls):<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/850\/43883682541_4f28e702ee_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1831\/43166150554_f53cd7aaa9_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1839\/43166145024_fe78b66e61_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At 5.7 miles we crossed a gurgling creek in a beautiful meadow. We stopped to rest and filter water:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1838\/42979000895_5227523008_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1820\/43835151672_8b2af8e31a_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/862\/30088715288_131084a508_c.jpg\" alt=\"Wildflowers\" width=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From the meadow we could see the slope up which the trail would soon be switchbacking:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1835\/42074780590_d154bfeed3_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And soon enough we were up there looking back down at the meadow:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/854\/42979204385_d538a6ea7f_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The higher we got, the more impressive things looked:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1778\/42979190625_58a66b64bf_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1775\/43835342592_324eea8281_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/854\/43835333792_29d42e9242_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately the trail is showing signs of heavy abuse here. Every single switchback has at least one eroded shortcut:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/861\/30014027918_53d6661595_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1779\/42087627240_1d73998082_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I see the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest is still improperly using quotation marks on their fire ban signs, which we have seen elsewhere in this wilderness:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1813\/43835337792_84bb5cf8f3_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1776\/43058620205_cfc11dd6ca_c.jpg\" alt=\"Air quotes\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After nearly eight miles we&#8217;ve reached the lake!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/858\/43166319564_d95e7a31cd_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The campsites are to the left, which requires crossing Adam Creek. There&#8217;s no bridge so I just plowed across and got my boots wet. I was too tired to care.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1778\/43835328422_0910bb8156_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Greg tried this log:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1776\/43835324112_cd377a9f96_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The next day we would discover a big logjam at the lake outlet that is much easier to use for crossing:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/936\/29000874707_0f19eb857b_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake outlet\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then we followed the lakeshore over to the campsites:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1794\/43835319862_a432986361_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake Trail\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Since it was Sunday afternoon and the weekend crowd had cleared out, we had plenty to choose from. We found one we liked and called it good. We were too tired to explore around and find the &#8220;perfect&#8221; campsite. It never got very cold overnight, which was weird since we were at such a high elevation. Monday morning was gorgeous and as soon as I got out of the tent I grabbed my camera and started taking photos.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/848\/43856837882_dfed94d1d9_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1774\/42099009950_00d92a52d4_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake\" width=\"800\" height=\"364\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/938\/30049161798_dbff1f0c14_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We ate breakfast and hit the trail, heading off for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.summitpost.org\/matterhorn-oregon\/150682\">Matterhorn<\/a>. We didn&#8217;t go down there because we didn&#8217;t want to have to climb back up to the trail:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1819\/30057602368_a89448d5d9_c.jpg\" alt=\"Hiking up the Matterhorn\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Almost there! You can see the trail as it enters the granite area of the mountain:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1837\/30057598498_ca00235b9c_c.jpg\" alt=\"Hiking up the Matterhorn\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1816\/43052062885_d8cf0b7528_c.jpg\" alt=\"Matterhorn\" width=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to tell from this picture, but this side of the Matterhorn is actually riddled with user trails:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1817\/43208430474_ddba5f3542_c.jpg\" alt=\"Hiking up the Matterhorn\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And then we were at the top! At 9,826&#8242; this is the second-tallest peak in the Wallowa Mountains. (Sacajewea is right next door and at 9,838&#8242; it is the tallest. It is also Oregon&#8217;s tallest peak outside the Cascade Mountains.) We were disappointed to see that it was very hazy all around us. We had a signal on our phones so we learned that all this smoke was from hundreds of miles away, from southern Oregon and even Redding, California. All of Oregon was covered in smoke. Yuck. I cleaned up this shot in Photoshop, but the rest are straight out of the camera:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1814\/30058214618_c0f596b68e_c.jpg\" alt=\"View from the Matterhorn\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Looking northwest. Greg went swimming again and I waded. It felt good to relax and cool off after our steep hike:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/853\/30069702608_a64dcb2f1b_c.jpg\" width=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Time for dinner! We drank the rest of the wine we&#8217;d packed in, which we &#8220;chilled&#8221; in the lake. (It didn&#8217;t actually get very cold.)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/937\/29001034807_dc87ab871f_c.jpg\" alt=\"Time for dinner\" width=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1797\/43957400371_5bc2698937_c.jpg\" alt=\"Chilling our wine\" width=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That evening I wandered around about a bit to see what there was to see. Our campsite was on the peninsula you can see in the photos I took from above, so there was a cove back there that provided some lovely photo ops:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/930\/43947393261_e026390628_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake\" width=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1814\/30078727018_a6660f686c_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake\" width=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Campfires are not allowed at Ice Lake at any time, yet I saw evidence of them anyway. I spent ten minutes dismantling this fire ring. I forgot to take a &#8220;before&#8221; shot, but here&#8217;s the after:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1833\/29019618127_416e704015_c.jpg\" alt=\"Illegal campfire\" width=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was another not-cold night, and when we woke up Tuesday morning we found that after 24 hours of smoke drifting into the area we now had super hazy skies. Some clouds had rolled in too.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1840\/30078831918_ecec9fcbe2_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake\" width=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/862\/43899276662_cf02c7c241_c.jpg\" alt=\"Ice Lake\" width=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We enjoyed a quiet breakfast with just the sounds of a few birds and the lake water. It was fantastic to finally visit this gem and it was REALLY awesome to not be there on a weekend so we could enjoy some peace and quiet. Ice Lake is truly even more gorgeous than I had imagined, and it was cool to hike up the Matterhorn even though we had to deal with some smoke.
