He ADORES this hike and goes at least once every spring. This was my first time here during the wildflower bloom. In addition to the flowers, we caught a lucky break with the views when the morning cloud cover burned off in the afternoon.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4224\/34680471452_55a62143c5_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Long ago a road led right up to the edge of the meadow, but the BLM has decommissioned that road to protect the area. Now you have to hike it, but it&#8217;s an easy stroll.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4196\/34680511562_07a6a737d1_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then you emerge from the forest into the meadow, which stretches away into the distance.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4246\/34680503612_b89f883147_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The meadow doesn&#8217;t have the spectacular displays of showy balsamroot and lupine that have been blooming in the eastern Gorge, but it has plenty of other wildflowers.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4201\/34680508082_4dd2498258_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4252\/34843700635_d43b7575a8_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4274\/34804538746_d3eeae99b4_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The BLM recognized the site\u2019s botanical importance and established it as a Research Natural Area (RNA) in June 1995. It had previously been established as an Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) in 1984. But although this spot of land is protected, the surrounding area is not, and the view is unfortunately peppered with clearcuts.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4274\/34843702895_2c65f2d631_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At the far end of the meadow the trail climbs up through the trees to a radio tower. I went up there while I waited for Greg. No views here.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4224\/34680488152_3bd9c798f3_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But the tower is at the end of a road and down that road a very short distance a clearcut enables a view of the Willamette Valley:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4251\/34457463410_997a521903_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Back at the meadow we sat and enjoyed the view. Mt. Jefferson had its head in the clouds:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4248\/34033958213_16f71a9e47_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Three Sisters:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4243\/34804543186_86a635e87e_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4247\/34680477052_18053aa469_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hiking back:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4268\/34680466642_a954905f84_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4243\/34457448820_29fee1c97f_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is a great hike if you have kids because it&#8217;s short and easy with a nice payoff at the end.
