We hiked the Little Badger Creek trail, which turned out to be a very pleasant hike.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/nHFSVG\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3816\/14255249146_da4758d040_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Greg remembered his boots, but not his socks, so he hiked in his Tevas. Good thing this wasn&#8217;t a steep or rocky hike!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/nKrj38\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2914\/14275039931_9234b81a3e_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The forest is quite nice here and the undergrowth is still lush and green.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/nMvQvp\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3776\/14298555873_d161c4bf2e_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Funny little mushrooms.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/nteWFs\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2927\/14091757920_4104dc4c84_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fairy slippers!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/nKxSzw\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3794\/14276320072_6eb021d5da_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The trail goes right along the creek in spots, and what a delightful creek it is! I wished I had brought my tripod for some slow shutter creek shots.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/nMvQBr\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3732\/14298556223_04d08d0ede_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/nKG5DC\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3753\/14277921574_17f6cbfb6f_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At one point we were visited by a hummingbird who kept flitting about. Man those little guys move fast! I managed to get two halfway decent shots. These were zoomed in all the way on my camera, then cropped further on the computer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/nKG5LG\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2922\/14277921984_117c575039_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/ntfhrY\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3748\/14091824418_c59c13c7ba_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here is the shot Greg got; his lens zooms twice as far as mine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/nKJn4Z\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3687\/14278367035_0319ebc95c_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>More views of this lovely creek. This is the kind of creek that I could sit by and just go zen for a long time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/nKJUwi\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2912\/14278472845_30b085da26_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/ntfhBs\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3825\/14091824968_8420e819aa_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We encountered a fair amount of blowdown. This was one of the more tricky ones to get over. I don&#8217;t think this trail seems much use or maintenance. (And we only saw one other couple the entire hike, a rare thing in the Mt. Hood Forest.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/nMwoDH\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2929\/14298664003_93f49194ce_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At one point the trail used to stay along the creek the whole way, which it crossed a bunch of times (topo maps still reflect this). But around the two-mile mark it&#8217;s been re-routed up the hill. The trail climbs up through the trees and passes through several meadowy areas.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/nKrRDe\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3831\/14275146251_8862bd9977_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/nKyqx9\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5191\/14276427582_57477aed65_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/nHHXbw\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2930\/14255653686_24bf5d0e2c_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We got glimpses of the surrounding hills, including a burn area. Anyone know what fire that was and when it happened?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/ntgMft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2921\/14092116419_15f5fb58c7_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/ntgMtp\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5569\/14092117169_c00d81ae87_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The balsamroot and lupine were definitely past their peak, but there weren&#8217;t totally bedraggled yet. Things bloomed early this year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/nKrRSa\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3740\/14275147001_1bd31a9aae_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/nKLrce\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5580\/14278771135_a5f4223efa_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/nKtmUr\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3823\/14275439801_2f27906e63_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We saw other wildflowers too, including silvercrown, currant, and some purple flower I don&#8217;t know.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/ntgMpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3709\/14092116929_a1b93701e1_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/nKtskM\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5495\/14275458091_34134da5d5_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/nKzWS5\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5583\/14276724712_54b73e588c_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This stretch was really pretty.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/ntgMJz\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3828\/14092118049_c2ed85b172_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The trail descended back down to creek level and the old miner&#8217;s cabin. The cabin was built in the 1920s by Tom Kinzel, a prospector and trapper. Here is what the Kinzel cabin looked like in the 1970s:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=hlZjAAAACAAJ\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3854\/15259898325_0f051d3c14_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Today it is just a jumble of logs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/nMy1aa\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5155\/14298978563_13ba78fa30_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/ntgSDp\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5311\/14092134569_f05f4d13e1_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/nKA2P9\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3767\/14276741362_942d4703f8_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We sat by the creek for awhile, eating snacks and enjoying the surroundings. Before we headed back we went down the trail a short ways to check out the old mining tunnel. Looks creepy and unstable so we didn&#8217;t go in.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/ntgUQ7\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3764\/14092141918_b4470f1ee5_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Headed back, with a little bit of a view of dry Central Oregon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/nthkZz\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3798\/14092226567_981b8ce694_c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Great hike for a partly cloudy day where views up higher would have been blocked. The only downside to this trail is that it&#8217;s a pretty long haul to the trailhead from Portland. In the spring, though, it&#8217;s actually a very pretty drive because the fields between The Dalles and Dufur are still very green and beautiful.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday\u00a0Greg and I drove around to the east side of the mountains for some sun and wildflowers.
